Our immediate and ongoing mission is to create a unique, culturally inclusive, integrated foundation year visual arts program that enables our students to:

- Increase their skills and knowledge as artists
- Transfer their studies to institutions of higher learning
- Contribute culturally to their community

 Program:

ProgramStudents in Foundation Year studies at the KIAC School of Visual Arts will experience an exciting, innovative and progressive program that will take them on an artistic journey and a journey of personal discovery. Several unique features distinguish the Foundation Year curriculum and approach:

- studies in 2 Dimensional, 3 Dimensional and 4 Dimensional Studio Practices are integrated around theme units that incorporate a visual culture approach to studying art
- the curriculum ensures that works from Northern, First Nation and other Aboriginal artists are studied

A newly dedicated facility will provide students access to excellent equipment, new media technologies, and world-class instruction. The program offers an integrated holistic approach to visual art that recognizes the student as a complete individual with his/her own unique personal and cultural experiences. Students will be encouraged to explore and share their creative processes while questioning them in relation to historical and contemporary cultural movements.

Studio and lecture courses are presented in consecutive thematic units, which allow for the progressive development of fundamental skills and techniques, while addressing concepts and theories relevant to traditional and contemporary art practices. Students will also pursue academic coursework that includes Visual Culture Studies and English. The Foundation Year program is designed to support, challenge and substantiate the student’s abilities, while providing the knowledge and skills required for transfer to degree programs at designated post-secondary art institutions.

 Facilities:

FacilitiesThe school is located in a 7800 square foot historic building in downtown Dawson City. This two-story structure was custom designed specifically for the needs of the foundation year program with workspaces for each student, common studio facilities, a lecture room, a media lab, indoor/outdoor common areas, a sculpture shop, a library/resource centre, a student gallery and an art supplies store. Storage areas for student projects and supplies are provided throughout the building. Laptop computers and a digital still camera are assigned to each student for use in both their academic and studio coursework, and wireless internet is available throughout the facility.

The majority of instruction occurs in an open plan studio room with individual student studio spaces situated around the perimeter of the room. Common learning areas are located throughout the building allowing for team-teaching, integrated studies and the building of community.

The SOVA campus is strategically positioned in the centre of the town with access to all amenities and service within short walking distances from the school.
