English for Communication:
The EC program helps students communicate in both written and oral English. To do this, ICC believes that students should have a good foundation in the structure of the language and also gain knowledge of American culture. After placement testing, students enter one of eight levels (Beginning 1, 2, 3; Intermediate 1, 2, 3; Advanced 1, 2). Most students spend an average of two terms in one level. EC classes are offered full-time (4hrs daily Monday to Friday) and part-time (4hrs Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 2hrs Tuesday, Thursday). High Intermediate to Advanced classes are in the morning; Beginning to Intermediate classes are in the afternoon.
The regular curriculum at the Intermediate to Advanced level is divided into two sessions daily: Listening & Speaking, then Reading & Writing. Full-time students have a choice of a variety of electives during the second session on Tuesdays and Thursdays after the part-time students leave.
English for Business:
In this high-powered program, students develop more effective oral and written skills for business situations. Through this program, students improve their general language skills with extensive reading of business articles, preparing speech presentations, writing business correspondence, practicing useful business idioms, and reviewing grammar. Each term, the class also focuses on specific business topics, such as sales and marketing, management, finance and investment, banking, or entrepreneurship.
As with all ICC classes, good oral communication skills are of primary importance. As such, students in English for Business have numerous opportunities to speak. Activities to encourage speaking include pair and small group discussions, negotiating, debates, role-plays and speech presentations.
Cambridge Examination:
This 12-week intensive course prepares students for the rigors of either the First Certificate Exam (FCE) or Cambridge Advanced Exam (CAE). The exams are given at ICC at the end of the courses. A 9-week super-intensive (30 hrs/week) FCE/CAE course is offered each January. Applicants for both the intensive and the super-intensive courses must pass an entrance pre-test on arrival. If their level is not adequate, they will be counseled regarding options.
ICC offers a unique 3-level Program for students who want to study for the TOEFL test or for admission to an American College or University.Learning outcomes for students enrolled in ICC's TOEFL program are expressed both globally in terms of general English language fluency and specifically in terms of student behaviors exhibited in classes.
Our understanding of fluency is three-part: General, Academic, and Cultural.
General Fluency is defined for the purposes of English acquisition as the ability to interact in the target language smoothly, with minimal effort, and to be able to read, write, listen, and speak in a comprehensible manner. Added to this general fluency goal is ICC's goal of supporting American Academic English (AAE) Fluency; that is that non-native speaking students will be able to successfully participate in and complete academic programs at U.S. universities in the same way as native speakers can.
Moreover, ICC supports the goal of Cultural Fluency—that the student will understand and be able to adapt to the norms of American culture without compromising their own cultural values. These three Fluencies underlie the philosophy driving the goals, curriculum, and assessment tools evident in the TOEFL program at ICC.
