Berlin Metropolitan School:
The Berlin Metropolitan School (BMS) is an international bilingual (English/German) day school in the Hackescher Markt area of Berlin’s Mitte district in northeastern Germany. Combined under one roof are a Preschool, Primary School and Secondary School (Middle and Upper School), which culminate in the internationally recognized IGCSE and IB diplomas. Our students take pride in meeting the challenges presented by a rigorous school program, at the core of which is a renowned international curriculum. Teaching is mainly conducted in English, in adherence to the standards of the IBO and Cambridge University.

Preschool:
At the Berlin Metropolitan School, we believe that a good start in school is crucial to a child's development; whether children grow to love learning or approach their lives with confidence and openness towards other cultures is in large part the result of their experiences during the early school years. The BMS Preschool is both an extension of home and an introduction to life in a larger, multicultural community.
The curriculum is based on an integrated day in which learning is not separated into subject areas. Listening, language, and the ability to follow directions are enhanced through a multi-sensory approach that includes activities with numbers, colors, letters, and shapes. Music, art, reading readiness in German, science, physical education, and drama are incorporated into the preschool week, as are regular field trips to parks, theaters, the z
oo, and nearby forests. In the BMS Preschool, we do not distinguish between “work” and “play”; rather, we believe that all classroom and playground experiences yield valuable learning opportunities.
Primary School:
In the primary school, teachers from eight countries accompany children on an important journey from the first to the fourth grades. It is a journey that begins in the classroom, where books, computers, and learning materials engage children's innate curiosity and desire to learn. It is also a journey that takes students into the neighborhood and the city of Berlin - to museums, parks, libraries, concert halls, religious institutions, and theaters. And above all, it is a journey that allows children to explore the world by sharing the traditions and perspectives of their classmates and teachers.
Beginning in the first grade, reading, math, science and social studies are taught in English by the class teacher, while German instruction is given at a native level in compliance with the Berlin state curriculum.
Our curriculum is framed by the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization, which counts two thousand members schools in 125 countries. The PYP's inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning fully engages students in the learning process: teachers encourage students to ask questions and teach them how to find answers. Our objective in the primary school years is to develop in our students a foundation for learning that includes a love of reading, skill in writing, and an understanding of numbers, as well as solid study skills and a sense of responsibility.
Middle School:
As an international, bilingual full-time school, it is our goal to make the English language accessible to our students on the level of a mother tongue and to educate our students to become enlightened and comprehensively educated youths, providing them with a canon of stable values that is oriented towards a humanistic world picture.
To open up diverse opportunities to our children in their selection of a continuative education, our students can complete the internationally recognized "Abitur" certification at BMS in the form of the international Baccalaureate. The goal of middle school is to comprehensively prepare the students for this last step in their education, namely high school.
The Middle School curriculum is based upon the Berlin State Curriculum and the Primary Years Program and combines traditional courses, such as English, German, mathematics, science, history, geography, art, music and physical education, with the interdisciplinary approach of the PYP.
In today's world, a well-rounded, modern education extends beyond the traditional curriculum to include a number of areas of study.
Our students follow an IT curriculum that is designed to teach them basic computer and Internet skills
. Every student has access to an individual school e-mail account through a student platform. In our computer lab, students learn how to do effective research on the Internet by using reference works and school web pages and following the "do's and don'ts" of Internet use. All students have lessons in keyboarding.
Additional foreign languages are available to BMS students in the afternoon program beginning in the first grade. A second foreign language is introduced formally into the timetable beginning in the 7th grade. The additional languages offered in the afternoon remain a part of the elective afternoon program in the Middle School.
