As an IB World School, fully accredited by the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and Colleges, our academic programme has enabled our graduates to attend many of the world's leading universities, yet YIS also strives to
create an appropriate balance between the academic and the non-academic, which we feel is important for a complete education.
Primary Years Programme:
The PYP (Primary Years Programme) offers a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning. It provides an inquiry-based curriculum model that incorporates guidelines on what students should learn, how students should act as learners and as community members, on teaching methodologies and on assessment strategies.
Early Learning Center:
Welcome to the Early Learning Center at Yokohama International School. Our approach to education of young children recognizes the potential and ability of children to communicate their understandings and inner thoughts and feelings using many different languages, a ‘hundred languages,' a metaphor, as ways of expression which may include words, movement, painting, drawing, sculpture, shadow play, music, dramatic play, reaching beyond dominant conceptions of language. We hold the image of the child who possesses innate curiosity to wonder and to ask questions, who searches for meaning and the interconnectedness of their surroundings and experiences. We endeavor to f
oster children's learning through the development of all their ‘languages' which are expressive, communicative, symbolic, cognitive, ethical, metaphorical, logical, imaginative, and relational by creating an environment to support this way of thinking.
Middle School:
We extend a very warm welcome to students and parents. Here in the Middle School, we believe these years to be crucially important for students, a time of change and a time for increased independence in their learning. Reflecting these changes, our program in the Middle School is both challenging and creative, developing the skills and understandings needed to meet the demands of High School while continuing to inspire enjoyment of and thirst for learning. We are conscious of how rapidly technology is changing our world and as such it is vital our students are exposed t
o what is current.
The middle school years are also a time when children are exploring who they are and where they fit into the scheme of things. They want to increase the level of independence in their own decision-making and our task as educators, in partnership with parents, is to guide them along this road with both patience and understanding.
High School and International Baccalaureate Diploma:
Our academic programmes in High School, involving IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in Grades 11 and 12, provide not only rigour and challenge, but depth, breadth and variety across all disciplines. Choices in the arts, the sciences, the social sciences and languages are extensive, and our co-curricular offerings, including our outreach programmes both locally and globally, as well as our sports, arts and other extracurricular programmes provide students with a wide array of enriching experiences and opportunities. IGCSE external examinations are normally taken at the end of Grade 10 (on average seven subjects per student) and all students are encouraged to start the IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11.
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other
people, with their differences, can also be right.
International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE):
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a balanced international curriculum which is designed to encourage high academic standards through a practical approach to teaching and learning. Most courses will be taught over a two-year period, beginning in Grade 9 with completion at the end of Grade 10.
Athletics:
In addition to the regular PE curriculum, Yokohama International School offers a wide range of extracurricular athletic activities designed to stimulate and develop the interests of every participant.
In Elementary School this is provided through a variety of after-school activities, where everyone can participate and the focus is on fun and learning of basic skills.
In Middle School, the emphasis remains on maximum participation, where effort and enthusiasm are rewarded alongside physical prowess. Players are encouraged to develop a long-standing enjoyment of competitive sports. They will begin to develop specific sports-related skills and learn to apply these in games situations.
At the High School level, the emphasis is on preparing student athletes for more competitive situations and striving for excellence in all areas. High School athletes are expected to show personal responsibility and commitment, and we encourage them to develop positive leadership skills, emotional control, mental toughness and to serve as good role models to the younger student athletes.
