We offer exclusive, quality English language education to local and international children. We are committed to excellence in education and believe that outstanding teachers are the key. The International School serves as a home base for international students, while providing a cosmopolitan environment for local Berliners. We consider the needs of each individual. The language of instruction at the International School Villa Amalienhof is English. The school follows the English National Curriculum from nursery through to sixth form and is the only school in Berlin that offers A-levels (Advanced Levels). Early Years:
Welcome to the Early Years Department (foundation stage) at International School Villa Amalienhof. The foundation stage describes the first International Schoolsstage of a child’s education and includes nursery (3 to 4 years old) and reception (4 to 5 years old).

Before starting at International School Villa Amalienhof, each pupil will need a doctor’s medical certificate confirming their good health. Parents should ensure when registering their child that all forms concerning emergency contact numbers and addresses are completed.

The school would be delighted to have children visit before their first day so they can get to know the school and meet their teachers.

Primary School:
International School Villa Amalienhof teaches the English National Curriculum; it has been adapted to meet the needs of the international community. At key stage 1 (ages 5–7) and key stage 2 (ages 7–11) students are required to study the following:

* English
* German (adapted to be in alignment with the German curriculum for Berlin and Brandenburg)
* Maths
* Science
* ICT
* History
* Geography
* Art and Design
* Music
* Design Technology
* Physical Education
* Personal, Social Citizenship and Health Education (PSCHE)
* French is introduced in year 5

AssessmeInternational Schoolsnts are carried out at the end of every year in both key stage 1 and 2. At key stage 2 a mid-year assessment also takes place; this provides an opportunity to determine at what level within the particular key stage children are performing in relation to the expected level. External assessments at the end of key stages 1 and 2 are important factors in determining a child’s readiness to move into the next year.

Secondary School:
The secondary school offers a programme intended to build from the skills and experience gained at primary level, to make young people ready to become citizens of the world – young people with initiative, a cosmopolitan perspective and a sense of social responsibility. The transition to secondary school is a great challenge, giving students much more independence and responsibility for personal organisation. It is a challenge which students enjoy as their skills develop. The programme gives them every International Schoolsopportunity to develop their potential to the fullest and to achieve the highest possible level of educational qualification before proceeding to universities around the world.

The secondary school’s academic programme, described in more detail below, offers breadth, depth, variety and a curriculum following three major steps: Key stage 3 of the English National Curriculum in years 7, 8 and 9; internationally recognized qualifications through the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in years 10 and 11; and A-levels in years 12 and 13.

The secondary school builds opportunity and develops its students by involving them in a range of activities beyond the academic curriculum. A wide range of creative activities is available – art, music, dance, poetry, choir, Spanish, chess and many kinds of sports, including golf. Students are also encouraged to develop their skills with information technology for communication, research and presentation.

Sixth Form (A-Level):

Students entering the 6th form are given more independence and control over their learning, as well as more responsibility. This can be both demanding and challenging. Members of staff are available to guide all students toward examination success. Education is seen as a three-way process.

Success stems from close co-operation and communication between home, school and student. Students will choose from between threInternational Schoolse and five different subjects, and will take the AS examinations at the end of year 12, while the full A2 examination is taken at the end of year 13.

English as a second Language:
This is a course for students who are not native speakers of English. Whether or not a student needs ESL is determined from an assessment test taken upon application to the school. The course is based on the National Curriculum and is adapted to the student’s needs and ability. The course develops skills and understanding in key areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The language focus is on grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, while the literacy focus is on narrative, characterisation, setting and genre. In addition, a variety of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama works will be studied. Progress tests will be given throughout the course, during which the students' ability and knowledge will be assessed.
