In Japanese we call abacus “Soroban”. It is a handy calculator which has simple and logical system. The Soroban has been in use for over 500 years. In this computer age the Soroban is still considered a useful educational and calculating device that cultivates strong concentration and patience. Tests have shown that abacus users were much faster than calculator users. Soroban helps build self-confidence and strengthens children’s ability to think critically and creatively. Children start as early as Kindergarten. The Soroban method helps one easily understand number concepts and is a comprehensive system for embracing concepts and high achievement in mathematics.

Q. My child is struggling with maths – can Soroban help?
Absolutely. Every child can benefit from Soroban.

Q. What is the teaching style of the class? 　
The children work independently at their own individual pace.
　　
Q. Do I have to help my child?
With some support from parents to facilitate daily Soroban exercises, the child’s progress will improve dramatically.

Q. My child is in High School – is it too late?
It’s never too late. Ikoma Abacus has many older learners and some of them are seniors.

Q. How quickly will I see a difference in my child’s math?
The first and most important thing you’ll notice is a new confidence and comfort with numbers. Every child progresses at a different rate, but enthusiasm and encouragement from parents will aide the child. It’s important that parents understand this is a complete system and every stage is valuable to your child’s development.

Q. Will my child resist abacus?
We find that some children are initially uncomfortable but with patience and support, they adapt and form a bond with the abacus. Children enjoy and celebrate the tangible progress they make.　

Q. My child has attention issues can he/she learn abacus?
If you child struggles with attention we require that you remain in the class to assist them to manage their behaviour because of the independent learning style of the class.

Q. What are some of the other benefits of Soroban?
Fine motor manipulation, self-esteem and can aid working memory.

Q. Can we take Zensyuren(Official) Test?
Yes you can.

IKOMA Soroban School has started by Mr. & Mrs. Ikoma in Kesennuma-city, Japan over 40 years ago. (They operated 6 schools still now. ) We can see excellent history in their school as one of top Soroban school. Also Mr Ikoma has worked long term as one of directors at all Japan SOROBAN association called "Zensyuren".

Ikoma Abacus Learning was open in 2004 September by Norie Ikoma (9Dan holder= Black belt in abacus).
