Literature:
Literature is an important part of the curriculum at Westwood Prep School. Each student will study several award winning books each school year. During this study they will learn about summarization, plot, theme, characterization, climax, setting and learn to analyze as well as have the opportunity to be creative.

Activities will include reading, answering quesPrivate Schoolstions pertaining to the story,relating the books themes across the curriculum, art projects, learning about the author and post-reading activities.

Writing:

* In writing workshop, students explore the process of the writing cycle and they draft their ideas, revise, edit and publish their work.
* Students learn the conventions of writing, including grammar and writing mechanics as they create polished written works.
* They learn art and craft of writing by experimenting with a wide variety of genres, from poetry and prose to research-based reports.

Algebraic Thinking:

Westwood Prep School students will develop the ability to think algebraically. They will use manipulative materials and calculators to solve algebraic story problems. They will be given the opportunity to explore problems,using many different approaches. They later use calculators to solve these problems and it allows the student to concentrate on the problem/solve process.

The strategies used for solving these problems will include,but will not be limited to use of blocks or other objects, working backwards,using tables, using diagrams, guessing, checking, and using patterns. These strategies will help the students become comfortable with identifying the unknown quantity in a problem. As they develop this comfort zone, they will begin to think algebraically, thus becoming prepared to tackle algebra in its more advanced form.

Social Sciences:
The world is an amazing place. There are many cultures, each having fascinating aspects. We become better people as we learn about others around us. To better understand history,culture,natural disasters, climate, and the environment is important to havPrivate Schoolse an understanding of geography.

Westwood Prep School puts great emphasis on helping the student distinguish between continents, countries, states, provinces, districts, cities, and smaller divisions allowing them to see the role they play in the world. History and current events are easier to understand with knowledge of geography. At Westwood Prep School, history will come alive and the results of past events on our society will be explored. Students will have this opportunity to apply what they have learned about historical events to current events, drawing the conclusions that the past has a direct influence on the present and the future.

Art:

The goal of WWPS art program is to develop students understanding and enjoyment of art,craft, and design. Frequently we incorporate class and school-
wide themes into our art projects. We aim to develop students' visual literacy through on-going discussion about their own work and that of others. Visiting art galleries and museums incorporates first-hand study of artwork from different cultures and time periods.

Spanish:

WWPS K-8 Spanish curriculum creates a stimulating language-learning environment to promote a positive attitude toward learning languages and experiencing other cultures.

* Spanish classes are active, incorpoPrivate Schoolsrating visual aids, songs, games, and acting out words.
* Reading and writing in Spanish begins in 3rd grade.
* By 5th grade, students have learned basic verb conjugations, how to tell time, count to 100, and how to talk about their lives and their school.

Latin:
The Middle School Latin program is an exciting course that introduces students to the Latin language and to culture and history of ancient Rome. In the language component of the course, students study Latin grammar  and vocabulary. This provides students with a better understanding of the English language and of the origin of many English words. As they tackle derivatives and translations, they develop valuable problem-solving skills while also broadening their understanding of the structure and flow of both Latin and English.

Students also study the culture and history of ancient Rome. They read history texts and historical fiction to learn about the culture, politics, and key figures in Roman history. As students develop an understanding of the past,they are better able to understand and interpret current events; they are also able to make more informed decisions about choices they make in the future.
