Organization of School Year:

Here at Spirt Bear, we divide the school year into 4 semesters of 12 weeks each. There is a one week break (no classes) at the end of each semester. There is a different topic for each week of the year to make sure there is variety. For each semester that the student completes they can get a certificate.

Classes include:
- Warm up / Current Events: Chat and news - may or may not be related to the weekly topic.

- Grammar: While grammar is not the focus of the classes, there will always be the need to learn some grammar. Grammar items will be taken from context, isolated, generalized and then recontextualized - that means that the grammar will be used to fit the language functions being learned and not the other way around.

- Student-Directed Work:
Students are encouraged to ask questions about language items that interest them or need to be learned for other purposes. This list is just a starting point.

- Vocabulary and Idioms: These will be worked on every day, based on the weekly topic, news, the student's questions or general conversation (i.e. related to the lesson of the day).

- Conversation:
This is the emphasis of these courses, using the language items learned in a natural way to improve confidence, vocabulary and fluency.

Technical Information:

All of our tutoring and conversation classes are delivered via the internet using Skype 5.0 video conferencing software (earlier versions of Skype will not work because they don't support video conferencing). The good news is that Skype software is free and easy to download. Skype to Skype video calls are free worldwide. Students will require a computer, a suitable internet connection, a webcam, microphone and speakers (people often use a headset with combined headphones and a microphone). There is always a qualified ESL teacher live online with you to help.
