Curriculum:
Academic standards are high — yet our aims go far beyond tests and exam results. We are here to educate the whole child. To help youngsters care about their environment, to care and understand about their own health and well being, to be independent learners and above all to have the confidence to go into the world and make a difference.
Our school strategy is based on being positive. We are positive with the children from the word go. A positive attitude breeds confidence and the willingness to try that bit harder. We don't just reward success. We reward effort, daily, in a hundred different ways. Every child is different and needs goals and targets related to their own needs. At Westfield we aim to do that.
Language:
The language of instruction is English. Afrikaans is the official second language.
Art & Music:
All students have basic music lessons each week as part of their general classes. Those wanting to specialize in a specific instrument can do so as an extra mural after regular school hours. Students purchase a recorder from the school which they use throughout their grades. A dedicated art teacher works with our children from Grade 5 to Matric. Exhibitions are put together on a regular basis.
Homework:
Children have the option of remaining at school until 15h00 to attend the homework period. There is no extra charge for this. A teacher from Junior Primary, Senior Primary and Junior High is on duty to facilitate this. Children are able to get assistance with their work, meaning no hours of homework when they get home. They may have projects during the term that will need to be completed at home. Junior Primary students do not normally have homework, however extra reading can be given should parents wish. The Junior Primary children are able to do their sports activities during this period.
External Examinations:
All the Grade 9 students are required to write the National exams as set by the GED. Portfolio work makes up a large percentage of the exam result. This portfolio work is completed during the course of the year.
Students entering Grade 10 must choose their subjects they wish to prepare for and write for their Matriculation in Grade 12. The subjects currently available are:
Mandatory Subjects - English, Mathematics, Afrikaans, Life Orientation
Three Choice Subjects - Biology, Physics, CAT, Tourism, Business Economics.
School Reports:
All ou
r children receive school reports at the end of each term. Parents are asked to discuss any queries with the Head Master and the Class Teacher. During the term the children’s work is monitored and should any problems be identified, parents will be asked to meet with the Head Master and/or class teacher and will be dealt with immediately.
Additional Training:
Our children are active members of our community. To produce well rounded adults, our students are given the opportunity to attend various additional courses. i.e. Level 1 First Aid, Fire Fighting, Civil Responsibility, Water Safety, Drivers Licence, Self Defence etc. Most courses are free of charge, however those such as the Drivers Licence do carry fees. The fire fighting and first aid courses are conducted by the Dept of Public Safety, WRDM and certificates are issued afterwards.
With the wide variety of specialists available in the area, both in business, agriculture and the Cradle of Humankind, our students have the opportunity to meet and learn from them through talks, lectures, school trips and visits to our school.
