Early Years:
The Early Years department provides a stimulating and high quality education, in a safe and caring environment, for children aged between 3 and 5 years. We aim to give children the very best possible start to their education and provide a firm foundation on which their future education can be built.
The Early Years department is housed in purpose built, state of the art facilities that include their own swimming pool and shower room, outdoor playground and play area
, indoor hall and ICT suite. Children also have access to specialist sports and music facilities.
The Early Years curriculum is based on the Foundation Stage and is delivered through topics each term. Structured, well planned play is an important feature of the curriculum. The curriculum encourages the individual development of each child through a mixture of whole class, group and individual teaching and is lively, exciting and challenging.
Pre-Prep:
The Key Stage 1 section of the Pre-Prep Department encompasses Year 1 and 2 children. Every class has a maximum of 18 pupils, and has a teacher and assistant teacher to lead the children in their learning. Our aim is to create a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment where both academic and social aspects of a child's development are cared for.
The children have large purpose built classrooms situated in the upper level of the Pre-Prep building. The two year groups are joined together by a large carpeted area which is used for assemblies, drama work, reading and circle time. Also on this floor are a purpose built IT suite and a fantastic Art/DT room which has a fully fitted home economics area, built at child's height, for our regular cookery sessions.
The curriculum is based on the British National Curriculum with adaptations for our international make-up. The children study Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, Art, Personal Social Health Education and Design Technology. They also benefit from specialist lessons in ICT (2 per week); Music (1 per week); swimming (1 per week); Thai (2 per week) and PE (2 per week). We also use the school library on a regular basis.
Careful planning has ensured that our pupils are fully prepared for their transition into the Prep Department's Year 3. In addition to their academic
studies, children are encouraged to participate in our after school Extra Curriculum Activities (You Time!) programme, where a host of sporting, artistic and musical activities are offered to enrich the children's learning experience.
Prep / Junior School:
The Junior School follows the programmes of study as prescribed in the English National Curriculum. However, as is fitting in any international setting, there have been adaptations, both in terms of the content taught and the methodology in teaching it, to meet the specific needs of our pupil population.
Shrewsbury is proud of its strong academic emphasis. In the Junior school it is a tradition that is fostered in a warm and nurturing environment. Small class sizes ensure that each child receives the individual support that they require in their all round development as people.
The Junior School, which caters for pupils 3 years and upwards, is divided into Pre-Prep and Prep Departments, and these in turn cater to the three phases of a child's learning at the primary school level.
Keys Stage 2
The four years that pupils spend in the Prep School at Key Stage 2, build on and develop the great strides they have made in the Pre-Prep School. We believe it is our responsibility to provide an exciting and stimulating environment in which children can discover and then make the most of their talents.
Every class has a maximum of twenty pupils, and it is through a wide range of challenges and experiences that our pupils develop lively, questioning and informed minds. They have the opportunity to explore, investigate and analyse during the course of their academic studies.
Field trips out of school, concerts, productions, sports competitions and a vast range of extra-curricular activities add breadth and interest to our pupils as they are guided towards the Senior School. Class and specialist teachers deliver the academic curriculum, which includes the following major areas: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, Physical Education and Modern Foreign Languages, including Mandarin, French, Japanese and Thai.
High academic and social standards are our expectation. A team of truly dedicated teachers and assistant teachers support pupils as they grow into self-confident, high-achieving and compassionate members of the community.
Senior School:
The Curriculum in Key Stage 3 of the Senior School is based on the English National Curriculum, with individual department heads tailoring their courses to take into account the pupil population and the local environment. In Key Stage 4, pupils follow two-year courses culminating in the IGCSE or GCSE examinations; at present 90% of examinations taken are IGCSE examinations. Most pupils then continue into the Sixth Form for A level study before heading off to universities around the world.
The school's vision statement sets its sights on the school being the top academic institution in the area. The foundations on which this policy i
s built include:
•rigorous testing on entry to the school as well as when transferring from the Junior to Senior School
•specialist teaching in the Junior school of: Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, ICT, Thai, and PE
