Reception:
Reception at St. Hugh’s is a warm and caring environment set up to give every child a secure foundation in their first year of school. We endeavour to stimulate and encourage all children to reach their full potential whilst also having lots of fun!
We offer a broad and balanced Foundation Stage using the Early learning Goals as our starting point. These are broken down into six areas of learning:
• Personal, social and emotional development
• Communication, Language and Literacy
• Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Physical development
• Creative development
Pre-Prep, Middle and Upper School:
Subjects for Pre-Prep, Middle and Upper School include:
English:
The English department believes that language is the basic building block
of communication and human creativity and so we aim to empower pupils, enabling them through well developed literary skills, to play a full role in adult life as creative and critical citizens. Children need the confidence to manipulate their language and thus to be able to explore ideas in a refined and precise way. At St Hugh's they are taught to write fluently, accurately and originally and to become sensitive, alert and appreciative readers.
Our teaching style encourages our children to investigate the possibilities of spoken language both as speaker and listener. We support their reading independently and widely by giving them the skills and confidence to seek challenge in their choices and to respond to the words with sensitivity born out of understanding.
Maths:
Our aims in the maths department are to teach the children about the beauty and fun of maths as well as to give them the ability to see maths all around them and to use maths well in their daily lives. We are still driven by the necessity of external assessments and at St.Hugh’s a combination of New and Traditional Mathematics is taught incorporating the National Curriculum Attainment Targets and gearing towards Common Entrance 13+ or possibly Scholarship Examinations.
Science:
The science curriculum aims to:
* Inspire students with a desire to find out more about the world in which they live through observation, questioning and investigation and provide them with the skills required to follow their interests and find answers to their questions
* Encourage awareness of and responsibility for the way in which their actions can affect the environment
* Develop an understanding of the importance of experimental evidence and a methodical and rigorous approach to investigation, using a variety of techniques, including practical work and the use of ICT facilities such as datalogging and the internet
French:
French is taught by three subject specialists to all children from Year 1 in the Pre-Prep as part of the normal school curriculum. The early exposure to a foreign language facilitates the acquisition of that language and the learning of other languages later in life. Many of our pupils go on to study a foreign language at A Level and beyond.
Art:
The school uses a variety of teaching and learning styles in art, with the aim of familiarizing each pupil with the elements of art: line, tone, colour, pattern, form and texture. We give each child the opportunity to experience a wide variety of processes including drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work.
Drama:
The learning objectives in Drama remain constant throughout the teaching years and progress is recognised and defined through the interpretation and performance of the given stimulus, as it becomes increasingly more complex in nature and style. Drama, as a subject, is divided into three separate teaching and learning areas.
Music:
We believe that music enriches peoples’ lives and so we wish to involve as many pupils as possible in musical activities. The Pre-Prep. has a policy to include all children in a number of events and religious festivals such as the Nativity Play. We have a large school choir which we encourage all Middle and Upper School children to join. The choir meets on a weekly basis and although its primary aim is to enable pupils to sing together, it also performs in public on a number of occasions, for example at the Christmas Carol Service, choral concerts and Open Day.
Design Technology:
At St Hugh’s we do a lot more than just hammer. Our DT rooms are sunny, large and well equipped thus enabling children to use a wide range of tools, materials and resources, including ICT. Standards are high and we take great pride in our work.
We also offer:
- Sport Classes
- Study Skills Summer Programmes to develop thinking skills
- Learning Support for children with special educational needs such as ADD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia and Asperger's
