The idea of combining ‘English and Cultural Education’ was born of the growing need of people, still early in their careers, to learn and improve their English. One of the most effective ways to learn a language is to be immersed in the environments and cultures where it is spoken. Globalisation is played out in the workplace: emerging cultural differences need diversity awareness as a more defined social competence.

Kurus English intends to fill this niche by offering a language school that goes beyond mere standard methods of English teaching and learning; at Kurus English students are presented with opportunities relating to the social and cultural world which broaden their horizons and assist them in gaining new perspectives. In this way, Cape Town partners our language learning approach and provides the cultural base for language learning opportunities.

Our English lessons are based on existing and internationally-respected teaching and learning materials, such as Oxford University Press’ Headway series. These courses are mediated and modelled by English native language teachers and provide the framework for the teaching and learning of English as an international language. In addition, we draw on authentic materials from local, Cape Town, South African, African-continental and global sources; these include, materials from books, newspapers, internet, etc. and provide unique and culturally-related content.

Kurus English combines the learning of English with building meaningful awareness of cultural diversity. This can be achieved by combining classroom-based English lessons with an integrated and practical language, culture and discovery programme. In short, Kurus English offers a morning class which aims, in best practice, to develop and improve our students’ international English competence. Here, intensive classroom-based courses will be integrated with a Language Excursions in the afternoon. This is our most significant differentiator from already existing schools in Cape Town.

The mere mention of the name of the port city of Cape Town, conjures up exciting and visually powerful imagery in many peoples’ minds.

While this may be true, Cape Town, its cultures, its languages and its history are also witness to the country’s troubled past of oppression and exploitation. Life in Cape Town today reflects the combined consequences of all our past decisions; both the good and the bad and all those in between. Any experience of our city therefore, will be one of many contrasts: a world-class tourist destination certainly, as well as a city which shares its many other faces with the visitor, including a set of particular social problems resulting directly from our history.
