Speech Therapy for Children in London

The Speech, Language and Hearing Centre, London:
The Speech Language and Hearing Centre at Christopher Place, Chalton Street in Camden, London is for babies and children under 5 who have hearing impairment or delay in speech, language and communication. The Centre is the only one of its kind in the UK. The Centre opened in September 1995 and is a Registered Charity (Registered Charity No: 1002463) offering this provision within the voluntary sector. The award winning, purpose built Centre provides an acoustically treated environment where a structured language enriched programme is offered to each child in small groups and in one-to-one therapy. We welcome full parental involvement and close liaison with other professionals involved in the child's development. A child-centred programme combines teaching and therapy from an interdisciplinary professional team. A close partnership with the whole family is central to our approach.

 What makes us special:

We offer:
* one-to-one and group occupational therapy which helps children develop their motor skills and general independence
* a blend of occupational therapy and speech and language therapy, combining skills from both disciplines
* a functional and a sensory integrative approach to therapy
* a combination of intensive therapy and nursery education

 Vision:

We have a commitment to excellence using a positive, sensitive, 'can do' approach that aims to develop 'the whole child'. This innovative environment empowers children and their families to learn to communicate with confidence.

 Recognition:

RecognitionOFSTED are the government body that inspects early years' education and childcare settings. We are fortunate to be identified as a Centre with excellent practice which can be shared with others. In December 2008, Ofsted inspectors said:

* Children are actively involved in making decisions and choices about their own work and activities. They inform key decisions about the planning of activities, the purchasing of resources and building design.
* Partnerships with parents are excellent. Parents report that staff know their child well, they are kept well informed and their contribution is valued and acted upon and their children’s voices are heard and their needs met.
* A whole team approach to engage children is well embedded throughout the work of the centre. Partnerships with other agencies and professionals and a shared holistic approach ensure that children receive excellent levels of support.

 Children with complex needs:

There is a growing trend for children with more complex needs to be seen at Christopher Place. We help children with social communication disorders and developmental delays by providing education and therapy that takes place in both a small group setting and in one-to-one sessions.
