Teacher Exchange Program in the USA

Amity Institute, San Diego:
Amity Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building international friendship and cultural understanding through teaching exchange. We are located in the Midway District, San Diego, California. Based on the belief that cross-cultural interaction creates an effective, dynamic learning environment, Amity Institute sponsors international educators to teach foreign languages, bilingual education, math, science and special education in US schools. Our Intern Program places teaching assistants in elementary, middle, secondary schools, colleges and universities. The Exchange Teacher Program arranges for certified, experienced educators from other countries to serve as temporary faculty at primary and secondary levels in the US.

Amity provides opportunities for global educators to share their knowledge with students, schools and communities. Amity Institute currently sponsors several teacher exchange programs in the field of international educational exchange.

 Mission:

In 1962, Dr. Ernest and Emily Stowell of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, founded Amity Institute to meet the needs of American foreign language teachers and students for direct and personalized contact with world languages and cultures. They also sought to involve young people from abroad in American education, family and community life. Several decades later, Amity Institute has broadened into exchange programs that work toward achieving international friendship and cultural understanding through teaching exchange.

 What we offer:

Since its inception, Amity programs have enabled thousands of people throughout the world to travel and enrich schools and communities as international educators:

- The Intern Teacher Program provides volunteer teaching assistants to serve as models of language and culture in US schools at all levels, from preschool through university. Interns assist in the classroom for up to 25 hours per week, take Personal Study Classes and live with American Host Families.

- The Exchange Teacher Program arranges for certified professional teachers to serve as temporary paid faculty at primary and secondary levels. Our international teachers currently educate American students in a variety of fields including foreign languages, bilingual education, math, science and special education.

 Homestay:

HomestayThe Host Family is the Intern’s substitute family and an essential part of his/her assignment. Your presence, particularly in the early weeks, will help the Intern feel at home and soothe any feelings of anxiety, insecurity or homesickness. Most Interns look forward to a genuine family living experience; they want to be included in family life and feel that you take interest in them.

Host Families provide:

* Free room and board for the Intern should be arranged with an American Host Family / individual in the community or on-campus housing
* Interns must have a private room
* The Host Family provides all meals except lunch on school days, which the school covers
* Interns may not live with their Supervising Teacher and, ideally, should not live with their School Coordinator
* Interns can live with multiple families, but each family must host for a minimum of nine weeks
