Nursery, Kindergarten and Recepti
on:
The children enter the Nursery, where they begin their schooling with structured activities based on the Early Learning Goals of the Foundation Stage. Activities are designed particularly to build up communication skills, as well as co-ordination and the ability to socialise successfully with others.
These skills are further developed in Kindergarten and Reception classes. Pupils complete carefully planned activities which cover six areas of learning. These areas lay the foundations before pupils enter Key Stage 1.
Key Stage 1
In KS1 pupils are taught mainly by their own class teacher but they are also taught by specialists in Swimming, Music and Thai Studies. We aim to limit our class sizes so that every child spends quality time with their teachers. Each class teacher is directly responsible for the pastoral care and welfare of the children in their respective class. Within a relaxed and happy atmosphere, the children gradually become
used to a more formal approach to education and emphasis is placed on the acquisition of the basic skills in numeracy and literacy. Formal testing is carried out and used as a tool to aid teachers and inform parents of their child’s progress. However we are keen to emphasise that our curriculum is not driven to testing.
Key Stage 2
Class teachers continue to be responsible for teaching the majority of the 11 National Curriculum subjects. The earlier section of Key Stage 2 sees a consolidation of the Key Stage 1 work. In the latter section of Key Stage 2 pupils are encouraged to extend their skills in preparation for secondary education. Again formal assessment and testing takes place throughout the Key Stage to monitor every child and target set to aim for maximum achievement from every pupil.
Art and Design Technology
All our children participate in art and design technology activities where they can develop their powers of observation, technical skill, presentation and creativity.
Drama
Children are encouraged to take part in a variety of dramatic activities to develop their imaginations and creativity. All pupils' have the opportunity to participate in plays and seasonal performances.
Music
Music is an integral part of the curriculum. Under the guidance of our Music Specialist, each child is encouraged to participate in music making, whether it be in the after school choir, musical groups or by taking individual lessons.
