Queen's University School Of English, Ontario:

12-Week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program:
Students in our 12-week EAP program participate in a student-centered immersion program, which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.English Language Schools / Classes In addition to the intensive study of these four language components, this program puts particular emphasis on developing the following academic skills:

* Vocabulary expansion
* Pronunciation comprehensibility
* English grammar and structure knowledge
* Academic writing techniques
* Autonomous learning and critical thinking

Program Levels:
When students arrive at Queen's they are given a placement test and placed into one of the following six levels:

* 110 - Beginner
* 120 - Elementary
* 130 - Intermediate Level I
* 132 - Intermediate Level II
* 140 - Advanced
* 150 - University Preparation

Each level lasts for one 12-week session. Upon successful completion of a level, students can advance to the next consecutive level. Levels 110 to 130 are designed as foundations to English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and levels 132-150 are intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
Requirements

* To succeed in this program, students should have a basic understanding of English including a familiarity with Roman Orthography (the English alphabet).
* Students must be at least 18 years of age.

Core Class (All levels):
Students participate in activities designed to help them develop all four language skills and use them in a communicative context. A focus of the core class is the acquisition of reading skills using level-adapted materials and/or authentic reading materials, and the expansion of vocabulary. Weekly writing assignments move from sentence and paragraph development in the lower levels to the successful production of academic essays at the upper levels. Individually and in groups, students will demonstrate an increasing control of the grammatical structures of English both orally and in writing. 15 hours per week.

Language Laboratory (All levels):
Students in all levels attend a listening laboratory class which focuses on the development of listening and pronunciation skills thEnglish Language Schools / Classesrough adapted and authentic materials. 3 hours per week.

Spoken English (Levels 110 - 130):
This class is delivered to levels 110, 120 and 130. The focus of this class is on the student's use of spoken English. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of pronunciation and the elements of conversation. Students practice spoken English in a variety of contexts including short dialogues, role-play and activities. 3 hours per week

Presentation Skills (Levels 132 - 150):
These classes are delivered to levels 132, 140 and 150. Students learn and practice the skills involved in public speaking and presentation. In 132 the focus is on engaging the audience using tone, intonation and pacing to create a dramatic or humorous effect. In 140 the focus is on making effective, organized academic presentations using reported speech, signposting and visual/auditory aids. In 150 the focus is on using persuasive language to engage in stimulating debate and effective seminar leadership. 3 hours per week.

Discussion (Levels 110 - 130):
These classes are delivered to levels 110, 120 and 130. The discussion class facilitator is a supervised Queen's undergraduate student who works with QSoE students to help them develop oral fluency and become adept at using discussion techniques. 1.5 hours per week.

Study Skills (Levels 132 - 150):
These classes are delivered to levels 132, 140 and 150. The study skills instructor provides students with curriculum support as well as the opportunity to develop and improve their autonomous learning and studying strategies. 1.5 hours per week.
English Language Schools / Classes
Activities/Conversation Groups (All levels)
:
A variety of language intensive socio-cultural activities are available for student participation. Students may also join in small informal conversation groups during the fall and winter.

4-Week Short-term Summer English Program:
Experience English language learning with enthusiastic instructors during one of the best seasons of the year - summer! Guided excursions to areas of local interest and a full slate of social events and activities will ensure that the classmates you meet from around the world will become your life-long friends.

The 4 week English Language & Culture program is offered in both July and August every year. You are welcome to take one or both of the 4-week sessions as the August 4-week program is different in theme and content from the July 4-week program. The themes will carry through the school trips and guided excursions which are different for each 4-week program.

In our summer sessions you will participate in a student-centered immersion program, which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, using Canadian cultural and social content. This program puts particular focus on developing communicative competence in speaking and listening.

Requirements:
* You should have a basic understanding of English
* You must be at least 18 years of age
* When you arrive at Queen's you will be given a placement test and given instruction appropriate to your level of language proficiency

Program Outline:
Participate in activities designed to help you develop all four language skills and use them in a communicative context. Engage in interactive role-play, pair and group discussions and activities and oral presentation. Expand your ability to read and write in English. Canadian culture is used as a theme throughout the courses. 15 hours per week.

Language Lab and Pronunciation:
Attend a listening laboratory class each week, which focuses on the development of pronunciation and listening skills. 3 hours per week.

Pronunciation and Conversation Course:
Does your pronunciation need polish?

* Improve your speaking and listening skills
* Develop fluency skills through informal presentations
* Obtain individual practice and feedback through a variety of pronunciation activities

Each of you will receive an analysis of your pronunciation and intonation. You will then work in the language lab and in classes on ways to improve your speech.

The classes emphasize individual practice and feedback, but you will also put your speaking into practice through role-plays and dialogues.

Business Internship Program (BIP):
The Queen's School of English Business Internship program allows you to study English and gain work experience in Canada. We are one of the few Universities in Canada to offer a program where you can study English and gain work experience at the same time. We work with qualified employers so that you get the best experience possible.

This program was designed by The Queen's School of English (QSoE) specifically for students who wish to advance their careers by improving their English language skills in the workplace and practising them within the Canadian work environment. You will have the opportunity to speak, learn and use English in an English-speaking work or business environment.

In our Internship Program you will get a sense of the Canadian work environment, get to know colleagues from other countries, and extend your language abilities and career horizons. The primary purpose of the InterEnglish Language Schools / Classesnship Program is language education, not professional experience. Students are required to have both Study and Work Permits to enter this program.

Requirements:
* For higher level students--new students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 71 iBT (530 PBT/197 CBT) or 670 TOEIC
* Current QSoE students should achieve high standing in either ESLA 140 or ESLA 150
* Home country work experience preferred

Curriculum
:
* 1st 4-week period takes place in classroom (22.5 hours per week)
* 2nd 4-week period is transitional: half-days in class (15 hours/week) and half-days in work placement
* 3rd 4-week period consists of time solely in the workplace
* Your instructor will visit you regularly at the workplace
* Program ends with a final week in the classroom
* Interns will be matched with the best available work placement; the School cannot guarantee a specific field.
