General English:
These courses are designed for people aged 16 or older who wish to improve their English language skills for work, school, or social reasons. All students take a placement test on arrival, so you can be sure of being in a group appropriate to your English skills.
General English 15 & 20 (Part-time):
Eight levels from beginning through advanced, designed for people 16 or older. Fifteen lessons of integrated skills (listening. speaking. reading and writing) or add 5 lessons of a focus course (for example: Slang & Idioms, Discussion & Debate, Current Events, Role Play). No F-1 visa required.
General English 25 (Full-time):
Same program as above with the addition of a second focus course. F-1 visa required.
Your teachers offer the most effective teaching methods in the profession. For three hours per day (Sessions 1 and 2) you will have a balance of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing to improve all your English skills, plus grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
Academic English:
These courses are designed for people aged 18 or older who need to improve their English language skills for university entrance. Course emphasis is placed on reading, writing, lectures, and note taking. Minimum enrollment is 8 weeks. It takes 8 weeks to complete a level and earn a Certificate of Completion.
Our Academic Program provides you with the language skills you will need to be successful at an American University. You must be at the intermediate level before entering the program.
Executive English:
IH-USA offers practical and relevant Executive English courses specifically designed for today's international business needs. Maximum group course size is 6. Clients must be at least 21 and have an English ability level of Pre-Intermediate or high
er. Each course is 2 weeks in duration. Both IH-San Francisco and IH-Portland have purpose-built Executive Centers.
International House Executive Centers train business and professional people from all over the world to communicate effectively in English. For our business clients effective communication means improving your skills in negotiating, making presentations, entertaining foreign clients, proposal writing, and the ability to speak confidently with colleagues in a variety of contexts.
Inhouse Tuition:
IH offers InHouse Tuition—the total immersion alternative to classroom lessons. Live in a private home and take your lessons In House - almost anywhere in the USA.
You will live in a private home and a qualified IH teacher will give you tuition in your host's home. When your lessons have finished for the day you will be fully integrated into family life: practicing your English, joining in conversations at mealtime, and socializing. This highly intensive course is ideal for business and professional people, academics, university students, and teenagers. Each course is individually designed for you.
Master Class (50+):
Designed for the mature student, 50 plus, these small group classes focus on everyday American English.
We emphasize listening and speaking, and combine classroom work with cultural and social activities. Classes meet in the morning, followed by afternoon or evening activities. On the weekend we schedule at least one full-day excursion. No F-1 visa re
quired.
Exam Programs:
IH schools throughout the world are highly regarded for their superb Cambridge exam programs. IH-USA schools offer the full range of Cambridge exam courses: PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE. The centers also prepare students for other important exams including: TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, CEIBT, and teacher training as well. If you are planning to sit the GED, SAT, GMAT or the GRE, we can arrange special tutoring.
Exam Prep Courses for Au Pairs:
Au pairs can satisfy their six credit educational requirement by taking one of the following examination preparation courses and sitting the exam. When you return to your home country you will have a useful qualification for either entry into undergraduate or graduate study in English-speaking university, or a qualification to work in a multi-national company where English is used in the workplace.
Each country typically has a preference for certain examination, for example: FCE, CAE and CPE are preferred in Switzerland, whereas TOEFL is preferred in France.
