Vancouver Jam Camps:
Workshops include voice, instruments and rhythm (with a fantastic collection of drums). Daily Cultural Workshops will introduce different musical cultures including Flamenco, African, Bluegrass, Indian, and 'Classical' music. There will be small-group and 1-on-1 workshops in a beautiful setting on the edge of Jericho Park. Instruction for specific instruments, voice techniques, and harmony will give participants the opportunity to develop their skills and love of music. What sets this camp apart from all others is it's commitment to the thrill of improvising and jamming for all levels of musical ability. Facilitators will bring out the best of young musicians so they not only explore and learn but have a blast while they do!
Jam Camp is a musical adventure for all levels of musical experience! Jam Campers explore music that celebrates life, nature, and cultural diversity. From African drumming to classical violin, Jam Camp encourages youth to use their instruments to jam with other musicians and to create and record new, original songs. Come join the fun!
Campers spend five days improvising, creating and recording songs with energetic and supportive musicians dedicated to unleashing their positive creative potential. Campers will receive a Jam Camp CD of their recorded songs.
Frequently Asked Questions:Is this camp appropriate for my child who doesn't have a lot of musical experience? Will they fit in?
This camp is intended to make music accessible to kids of all musical backgrounds. We have easy to play instruments that make joining in with other musicians an easy and fun thing. This year we are introducing the McNally Strumstick, a stringed instrument that gives players instant success and fun, along with other easy instruments such as keyboards, Irish penny-whistles, hand drums, Didgeridoos, and others.
Is this camp appropriate for my child who has a lot of musical experience? Will they fit in?
Jam Camp provides many opportunities for musicians with more experience to deepen their musicianship. Traditional music lessons often provide great technical training and musical theory, however there are few opportunities for musicians to learn how to improvise, especially in collaboration with others. Also, experienced musicians get the chance to mentor others and take leadership roles in the composition and recording of the Jam Camp CD.
Will there be fun activities for the younger ones during the more sophisticated workshops? How do you manage the wide age range?
Absolutely. There will be art activities and outside play time, as well as quiet spaces for kids to relax when they need a break. When children of mixed ages play together, the older children naturally fall into a leadership role, creating rich and fulfilling experiences for everyone involved.
