1. National Geographic Encyclopedia of Space, by Linda K. Glover, Patricia S. Daniels, Andrea Gianopoulos, Hardcover
This book offers clear and concise explanations of the
planets; telescopes; manned space flight; satellites;
the origin of the universe; the contributions of
Nicolaus Copernicus, Edwin Hubble, and Stephen Hawking;
and much more. The Encyclopedia of Space answers such
questions as How vast is the Milky Way? What makes a
satellite stay up? How does deep space affect our daily
climate? Arranged in six thematic chapters, the
Encyclopedia of Space brings together in one accessible
volume the varied aspects of space science: the solar
system, deep space exploration (manned and unmanned) and
discovery, satellites and orbits, and the commercial,
scientific, and military uses of space. Tables,
diagrams, maps, and fact boxes provide additional
information and value. The encyclopedia is enriched by
recently declassified intelligence material and
photographs from the U.S. Navy and the National
Reconnaissance Office, the latest Hubble images, and
essays written by leading professionals in the field,
such as Kathryn Sullivan and Sylvia Earle. Astronaut
Buzz Aldrin, who landed on the Moon with Neil Armstrong,
will write a foreword to the encyclopedia.
2. Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years -- The
Astronauts' Experiences in Their Own Words by
Smithsonian Institution
An unprecedented look at the Space Shuttle experience,
as told by the astronauts themselves. The editors of Air
& Space/Smithsonian magazine wrote all of the people who
have flown on the Space Shuttle since 1981 with a simple
request: Tell us your best stories. The astronauts'
fascinating and candid responses reveal the drama of the
Shuttle experience, from launch to landing, like no
other book has to date. More than 300 stunning pictures
selected from deep in the NASA archives, most have never
been published. Personal anecdotes drawn from written
submissions or original interviews with 77 Shuttle
astronauts. Historical section highlights in words and
pictures the greatest accomplishments of the Shuttle's
first two decades. Complete with brief descriptions of
all 103 flights from April 1981 to April 2001, Space
Shuttle includes a foreword written by astronaut Jim
Lovell, who was portrayed by Tom Hanks in the film
Apollo 13.
3. Our Solar System by Seymour Simon, Hardcover,
Publisher: HarperCollins
Our Solar System was born almost 5 billion years ago at
the edge of the Milky Way galaxy. In over fifty
dramatic, full-color photographs and an easy-to-read
text, award-winning author Seymour Simon takes you on a
fascinating tour of the nine planets, dozens of moons,
and thousands of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that
travel around our sun. First, Simon explores the star at
the center of our Solar System -- from the constant
nuclear explosions at its core to the giant storms on
its surface as geysers of flaming gas over a hundred
thousand miles long rise and fall in just a few hours.
You will also learn about the four rocky inner planets,
from airless Mercury to fiery Venus, her sister planet,
Earth, and mysterious Mars. Then join the thrilling
Voyager missions to explore the four gaseous outer
planets: gigantic Jupiter, ringed Saturn, tilted Uranus
-- the planet "lying on its side" -- and windy Neptune.
You will finish your journey at distant Pluto, then
visit the asteroid belt and examine comets, the "dirty
snowballs" in space. A companion volume to Simon's
landmark series of individual books about each of the
planets, the sun, stars, and other space sights, Our
Solar System will introduce you to some of the most
amazing mysteries in the universe.
