Technical Degree Courses in Spain, Barcelona Technical University of Catalonia (UPC):
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya is a public university that specializes in the fields of architecture, engineering, merchant seamanship, economics, health sciences and applied mathematics. Although antecedents of the University existed that, in some cases, went back to the mid 19th century, UPC itself was founded in March of 1971 and was originally known as the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona. Given its wide regional presence with campuses and degree programs throughout the region, the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona changed its name in 1984 to Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
Under applicable law, the university is self-governing and determines its own control and assessment procedures, teaching systems and the appropriate balance between teaching and research. In addition, UPC has legal responsibility for the management and administration of its facilities and services.

Living and getting around in Barcelona
Barcelona is the main city in Catalonia, an autonomous region located north east of Spain.
It has a surface of 32.000 m2 and a population of 7 million people. It is ruled by the autonomous government called Generalitat de Catalunya.

There are many things that make Barcelona a very attractive city to study and live in: its historical and architectural heritage, its cultural activities, its cosmopolitan nature and its privileged location by the Mediterranean Sea.

Most of the UPC schools, departments and facilities are located in Barcelona, but there are some in close towns: Castelldefels, Manresa, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Terrassa and Vilanova i la Geltrú. All of them are very well connected through the wide network of public transportation available in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

There are two official languages in Catalonia: Spanish and Catalan. Both of them share a common origin and they are spoken by almost everybody.
