To meet the needs of our students we offer two great teacher training programs that will qualify you to teach English, whether you are planning to do so in your home country or in Canada or Travel the world and teach.

If you are looking to teach English in Canada (and overseas) we recommend the following courses:

TESL Diploma Program:
This program in an in-depth look at teaching international students both locally and abroad. It follows the TESL Canada guidelines and is accepted in Canada and all over the world. Students enjoy the balance of practical and theoretical methods of teaching. TESL students will observe experienced teachers for 10 hours and teach for 10 hours of supervised teaching to ESL students. All of these are organized and completed at International House Toronto. Class sizes are maximum 10 students to assure that each student is given a great amount of personal attention. Graduates are ready and confident to teach after graduation and are quickly hired locally and abroad.

In order to apply, students must have a university degree and pass the admissions procedure. Non-native speakers must also provide either a TOEFL or an IELTS score.

Intensive TEFL Course:
4 weeks Monday to Friday - 9am to 3:15pm (please note that the practicum will extend into week 6)


Semi Intensive TEFL Course:
10 weeks Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 6:00pm to 9:30pm (the practicum will extend into week 12)


Cambridge CELTA Programme:
The CELTA program is the longest running teacher training certification in the world. Students who finish this program will receive a teaching award from the University of Cambridge. The CELTA course is an excellent choice for those who are looking to teach in Europe or the Middle East, although this certification can be used worldwide. Our CELTA program meets the TESL Canada requirements, so it can also be used in Canada too. Our CELTA program is offered on a part-time basis to make the transition from one career to ESL teaching a little easier. However, although this course is offered on a part-time basis, students of the CELTA program must be prepared for a semi-intensive course.

Proficient English ability
Pass the Admissions tasks

Duration
11 weeks Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm to 10pm



For those who are looking to teach overseas only, we recommend the following courses:

TESOL/TKT - Diploma Program:

IH Toronto also offers a 10 week intensive TESOL/TKT Diploma program for those without a university degree or for students with a lower level of English proficiency. This program is ideal for native English speakers looking for some formal training and perhaps considering teaching abroad. It is also a great program for non-native students thinking about teaching English in their home countries. The IHT TESOL Diploma program is designed with a similar curriculum as the TESL Diploma. However, this program also includes some time dedicated to learning some of the fundamentals of the English language necessary to be a successful teacher. The TESOL program also prepares students to take the TKT exam. The new Teacher Knowledge Test is becoming a very popular necessity for English teachers.  The TKT is provided by the University of Cambridge to prove English and teaching knowledge.  It is also the stepping stone to take the CELTA programme. 

Duration - 10 weeks Monday to Friday from 9am to 1:45pm
 

IHT TEFL Certificate Courses:
Teaching English overseas is almost becoming a rite of passage.  Many people teach overseas to see if this is an industry that they would like to pursue long term.    The TEFL Certificate will give students an insight into how English language teaching works, the basics of lesson planning and an introduction of teaching methodology and techniques.

Students will teach real ESL classes to really understand how the classroom works and to practice their new skills.  This program can be used overseas only, but those who wish to continue in this industry will receive a discount on the TESL or CELTA program.
