The School of Teaching ESL (S-TESL) is located in the Licton Springs neighborhood in North Seattle, Washington. In conjunction with Seattle University, The School of Teaching ESL has created a cooperative agreement that gives students several choices regarding professional development in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). There are many good, practical courses leading to a certificate in teaching English. Ours earns post-baccalaureate credit from Seattle University, which many students find advantageous.

Class Formats:
S-TESL offers a variety of class formats that can be applied towards certificates, or the ELL endorsement. Formats may be combined to earn your a certificate or endorsement.
- Four Week Intensive - upon completion earns 12 credits, which can be applied towards a 12 credit certificate, a 24 credit certificate, or the 25 credit endorsment.
- Evening Classes - each class earns 3 credits, which can be applied towards a 12 credit certificate, a 24 credit certificate, or the 25 credit endorsment.
- Online Classes - each class earns 1- 3 credits, which can be applied towards a 12 credit certificate, a 24 credit certificate, or the 25 credit endorsement.
- Summer Intensives - each class earns 3 credits, which can be applied towards a 12 credit certificate, a 24 credit certificate, or the 25 credit endorsement.
TESOL Programs:
- 12 Credit TESOL Certificate: Any holder of at least a bachelor’s degree from an approved college or professional school can earn The Seattle University Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages for completion of twelve credits with a GPA of 3.0. EPDES 930 is a required class. A Bachelor’s degree plus this certificate is a typical requirement for overseas employment. S-TESL graduates with this level of training also find work in private language schools and community-based programs in the U.S.
- 24 Credit TESOL Advanced Certificate: Any holder of at least a bachelor’s degree from an approved college or professional school can earn The Seattle University Advanced Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages on completion of twenty-four credits (includes the credits from the 12 credit certificate). Six credits may be transferred in. An advanced certificate can improve your marketability for more competitive teaching positions in the U.S. and abroad.
- ELL Endor
sement Program: You can meet all Washington State OSPI requirements for an ELL Endorsement. You must have a valid Washington State teaching credential at the time you apply for an endorsement. Online and onground credits can be applied to the endorsement.
- Visiting Educators Program: The School of Teaching ESL is able to provide short-term teacher training for visiting English language teachers, particularly international educators. Participants may choose to receive Seattle University credit (provided participants meet admission requirements) or may choose non-credit options.
Groups of up to 20 can be accommodated for specialized teacher education training. Short-term workshops (3-6 hours) or courses lasting from one to four weeks are available. Programs can be tailored to specific group needs. Home stay accommodations can be facilitated by a local home stay provider.
- TEFL Program for Non-Native English Speakers: This course is designed for non-native speakers who wish to learn and improve teaching skills by learning to teach English. This course is taught at the level of an introductory college course. In this 80 hour course, participants will understand current methodology for teaching English in a foreign language setting, practice creating activities for all skill areas, be able to integrate grammar, music, drama, and art into language activities, observe local language classrooms and receive a Certificate in TEFL from the School of Teaching ESL.
Upon completion, participants earn a “School of Teaching ESL TEFL Certificate”. This certificate will help you improve your English and your ability to begin teaching English in a foreign country.” The certificate does not meet local (U.S.) teaching certification or degree requirements for teachers, but it can be a useful addition to a language teacher’s qualifications.
- Seattle University (SU) Graduate Programs (Seattle University Degree Programs and Post-Master’s Certificate in TESOL): Seattle University College of Education and the School of Teaching ESL have created a cooperative agreement that gives students many choices regarding continuing professional development in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. Up to twelve credits earned at S-TESL can be used in graduate programs at Seattle University College of Education. Not all classes taken at The School of Teaching ESL can be taken for graduate credit.
