Our success can be attributed to our professional employees who are fully committed to its aims and objectives. Enthusiastic tutors employ both modern and traditional methodologies in the classroom to encourage enjoyable and productive learning. Our teachers are native English-speaking university graduates, most holding post-graduate qualifications, with wide-ranging and diverse work experiences gained locally and internationally.

 TEFL / CELT Course:

TEFL / CELT CourseThis course is ideal for someone who wants a career change, or just wants to experience the rest of the world and teach while doing so. Our TEFL client base varies from business executives to young adults and retired people interested in a career change. The course is intended for a wide range of candidates including those who are entirely new to teaching, those who have taught languages but have little or no training and teachers of other subjects who want to take up language teaching.

The course is run full-time and part-time and consists of 120 hours face to face contact. This is broken up into:

- Seminars and workshops
- Teaching practice with supervised lesson planning and preparation
- Observation of experienced teachers and peers
- Trainer directed study

The TEFL certificate gives the successful candidate the opportunity to work both in Ireland and many countries abroad.

 Teaching in Ireland:

Teaching in IrelandTeachers in the recognised English Language Teaching (ELT) sector in Ireland need to have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and an ACELS recognised teaching qualification.

Holders of awards from other countries need to present copies of their certificates and transcripts to ACELS. Applicants will receive either a standard letter signed by the Chief Executive confirming that their award meets requirements and they are eligible to teach in the recognised sector in Ireland, or informing them that their award is not acceptable and does not enfranchise them for employment in the recognised sector in Ireland.

To meet requirements TEFL certificates normally need to be of more than 115 hours duration and include teaching practice, unless they were awarded prior to January 1st 2005. Some courses available in Ireland do not meet the above criteria, however Edgewater College is recognised by ACELS as a provider of the Certificate in English Language Teaching.

TEACHING ENGLISH ABROAD
The qualifications for English language teachers vary greatly from one country to another. In some countries it is sufficient to be a native speaker while in others you need to hold a master’s degree or equivalent in English language teaching. Most countries however require teachers to hold a bachelor’s degree and an English language teaching qualification with a minimum of 100 hours input sessions and teaching practice.

If you are planning to teach abroad, it is beneficial to look at a few different English language teaching jobs in the country you’d like to teach. These jobs are frequently advertised on the Internet. They will give you an idea of the qualifications required to get a suitable job and the sort of pay and conditions you can expect. Once you know this, you can decide on the type of English Language Teaching certificate you should choose.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES AT EDGEWATER COLLEGE & ABROAD:
Occasionally job opportunities arise with Edgewater College both in Ireland and abroad. Applicants who have completed their CELT at Edgewater College will be given special consideration.
