TEFL course:
We offer a 75+ hour TEFL certificate course that contains standard elements of a complete TEFL (Teacher of English as a Foreign LanTESOL / TEFL Coursesguage) program, but is enhanced to serve the Latin American region. The course is broken into two components: Theory and Practical. The Theory component consists of 40 hours in-class study. The Practical component consists of 10-20 hours of instructor-assessed student teaching. A minimum 25 additional hours consist of self-study on grammar presentation, group project work, and lesson planning.

The TEFL Program Theory Component is divided into three sections, covering 13 chapters of the TEFL Coursebook, group Case Study Project work, and a final written exam.

SECTION 1 : Introduction to EFL teaching
This section will introduce TEFL students to the theories behind EFL teaching. Critical teaching skills are introduced and the motivations of EFL students are examined, as well as Latin American socioeconomic history and current affairs. The section will continue with a look at the elements of language present in native speakers and EFL students and how they should be presented in a classroom. Cultural differences will be highlighted, and teaching theories will be further detailed.

SECTION 2 : In the Classroom
Section 2 exposes the TEFL students to the everyday methods of classwork. This section will examine Productive Skills, Receptive Skills, Introducing New Language Structures, Communicative Activities, Teaching Vocabulary, and Practice. Here the TEFL student will become familiar with teaching materials, and learn to design and deliver various lessons covering the four basics: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

SECTION 3 : Class Management and Planning
Section 3 examines in more detail the necessities of planning and class management. The TEFL student will learn about the administration of classes, the assignment of groups and study material, and how to properly assess a language learning system. The section is supplemented by a unit on Working in Latin America.

TEFL Practical Teaching Component
The Practical component allows the TEFL student to apply their skills learned in the Theory component to a real classroom. you will be observing and teaching Mexican EFL students enrolled in English classes at Hamer Sharp, our Mexico City affiliate language center. For the first week (classes 1-5) TEFL students will observe 2 one-hour classes each day, while completing assignments. The observed classes vary in size, student age, and level of proficiency. On Day 5, TEFL students will work in unique class covering topics such as program development, local culture, promotional activites, and teacher/student conferrences. Day 5 brings TEFL students in contact with working EFL teachers.

In the second week (classes 6-10) TEFL students will prepare and deliver 2 classes of 55 minutes each. TEFL students will be assigned varying class sizes, student ages, and levels of proficiency. Each prepared class will be directly related to Theoretical components studied that day. The Practical component final mark equals 25% of the final course grade.
