CELTA:
Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

What is CELTA?
The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is the most highly regarded and widely recognised qualification for new English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. It is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, which is part of the University of Cambridge.

The CELTA is a pre-service course for people who have little or no previous experience of teaching English. However, it is also a very useful course for teachers who have been teaching for some years in different contexts or with few or no formal qualifications. Successful completion of the CELTA course has enabled many candidates to obtain their first teaching position: the course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which to develop as a teacher of English. The main focus of the course is on the basic techniques of English language teaching and their practical application in the classroom.

Who is eligible to apply?
Course participants may vary widely in experience, education and age. However, CELTA regulations require that: Candidates should be at least 20 years old at the start of the course, although exceptions can be made to this at the centre’s discretion. They must have a standard of education that would allow entrance to higher education in their country. They must have an awareness of language, and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course. Finally, they must also have the potential to develop into effective teachers. Acceptance onto the course is conditional upon successful completion of the application process, including an interview.
