Since 1979, Washington Academy of Languages (WAL) has been offering classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), World Languages and Teacher Education! WAL is located in the vibrant heart of downtown Seattle and offers TESL programs on local Seattle university campuses.

WAL in conjunction with Seattle Pacific University (SPU), offers an internationally recognized graduate level TESL Certificate Program for teaching English abroad. A Bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for admission to the program.

The courses required for WAL's TESL and Bilingual Education Certificates meet all state requirements for the Endorsement. Credits are awarded by Seattle Pacific University and/or Pacific Lutheran University. SPU is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Washington State Board of Education. PLU is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Washington State Board of Education.

WAL is authorized to issue the Form I-20 which is used to obtain the F-1 student visa.


 Courses:

CoursesAccredited Graduate Certificate in TESL/TEFL in conjunction with Seattle Pacific University (SPU). The TESL program consists of eight courses at the post-baccalaureate level. Each course earns 3 university quarter credits, for a total of 24 university quarter credits. It is necessary to take all classes for credit in order to receive the Certificate. A graduate Certificate in Bilingual Education is also available. All classes are offered onsite in the evening, during the day in our Summer Intensive program, and online.

Students who complete all eight courses will be awarded the TESL Certificate. Graduates who already hold a Washington State teacher's certificate will also be eligible for ELL Endorsement and Bilingual Endorsement.

Teaching Prospects:
The WAL/SPU TESL Certificate is internationally recognized by language schools all over the world. Graduates of our Certificate program have found teaching positions in local community colleges, grade schools, and high schools. Others have gone on to teach children and adults in Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Almost all of our graduates who have sought employment abroad have found positions of their choice.
