Washington Academy of Languages (WAL) is located in the vibrant heart of downtown Seattle, and offers an Accredited Graduate Certificate in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) on local Seattle university campuses. Our TESL Certificate Program has an established reputation for combining practical skills with theory enabling graduates to become confident, creative, and effective instructors. Since 1979, WAL has been offering classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), World Languages and Teacher Education. Credits are awarded by City University of Seattle, which is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Accredited Graduate Certificate in TESL/TEFL:
Photo of Graduate Certificate in TESL in Seattle, WAThis program is offered in conjunction with Seattle Pacific University (SPU). The TESL program consists of eight courses at the post-baccalaureate level. Each course earns 3 university quarter credits, for a total of 24 university quarter credits. It is necessary to take all classes for credit in order to receive the Certificate. A graduate Certificate in Bilingual Education is also available. All classes are offered onsite in the evening, during the day in our Summer Intensive program, and online.
The TESL Program gives participants a foundation in second language acquisition theory, linguistics, language teaching methods, and cultural issues related to teaching a diverse student population. Participants acquire hands-on experience utilizing contemporary instructional methods. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of teaching.

TESL Certificate Requirements
Completion of the TESL Certificate requires a total of 8 courses (24 credits):

- Principles of Language Learning OR Introduction to Linguistics
- History and Methods of Teaching ESL/Bilingual Education
- English Structure for ELL Teachers
- Methods of Teaching Spoken Language
- Methods of Teaching Reading and Writing to the ESL Student
- Issues Across Cultures
- Testing and Evaluation of the ESL Student
- ESL Materials Selection and Development

Students who complete all eight courses will be awarded the TESL Certificate. Graduates who already hold a Washington State teacher's certificate will also be eligible for ELL Endorsement and Bilingual Endorsement.

Earn a Seattle Pacific University Post-Bachelor's TESOL Certificate via onsite four-week intensive classes, evening classes, or via online classes anywhere in the world.

School of Teaching ESL in Seattle, WA (in cooperation with Seattle Pacific University) gives students several choices regarding professional development in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

Offered via three study formats, our accredited TESOL program may be used to earn a Seattle Pacific University Post-Bachelor's TESOL certificate (12 credit or 24 credit options) or WA state ELL Endorsement offered at School of Teaching ESL.
