TEFL / TESOL Certification Program:
The goals of our TEFL Certificate course in Boston are to teach you, in a short amount of time, what will be of the most value to you as you begin to teach ESL / EFL. At EC Boston, teacher trainers have the opportunity to observe our expert instructors while mingling with international students who have come from all over the world to study at EC Boston. In small classes, trainees learn which methods work best and why. They combine theory with the practice of teaching volunteer students. Teacher feedback provides additional valuable support to first-time
teachers. Trainees learn how to set goals, address different learning styles, plan classes, evaluate text
books, manage classroom atmosphere, test students, and even learn about professional development opportunities. In addition to all this, teacher trainees put together a large portfolio of course materials, lesson plans and job research which can be used throughout their teaching careers.
Teaching Practice:
Becoming a good teacher means that you must have lots of practice and observation. Students in our course spend at least 3 hours outside of the class in observation of actual ESL classes (some at EC Boston), several hours in peer teaching, and at least 6 hours in a teaching practicum in which they teach real ESL students. By both observing good teaching and getting constant feedback on your own teaching, you can refine your skills in a safe, intimate environment. Our maximum class size is 6 students which allows for personal attention from the trainers and facilitates more discussion among classmates.
A Typical Day:
A typical day in both the full-time and part-time program starts with teaching and/or watching a fellow trainee teach for a few hours during the morning practicum, then giving and receiving feedback on the lesson. Afternoons begin with peer teaching on a grammar topic and a theory topic. Then, trainers lead workshops on a variety of topics such as: needs analysis, assessment, presenting vocabulary, syllabus design, interaction & group work, error correction, receptive skills, productive skills (speaking/ writing), pronunciation, teaching older vs. younger learners, culture or music in the classroom, classroom management, resume workshop, job searching, professional development, etc.
