Our TEFL Certificate Program is designed
to prepare participants for the exciting career
of teaching English as a foreign or second
language. Graduates go on to teach both in the
United States and overseas. Whether you are a
college student or recent graduate, an
experienced teacher wishing to obtain a further
credential, or a professional wishing to switch
careers or plan for a retirement overseas, our
program can meet your need.
Two Study Options: A four-week intensive
program and a twelve-week Saturday program. Both
programs include an exploration of the
foundations of teaching, as well as providing an
experiential introduction to instructional
strategies and techniques. In addition, we
provide a minimum of six hours of supervised
student teaching experience. You will have the
opportunity to observe our experienced teachers
at work and to teach BAE’s own ESL students.
Content and Methodology: Our program uses an active and participatory
methodology. Trainees have the opportunity to
observe our experienced teachers at work and to
teach BAE’s own ESL students Trainers teach
workshops using the techniques that you will
draw on in your own teaching.
Topics covered include: Introduction to
Teaching, Linguistics, Pedagogy, English Grammar
for Teachers, Classroom Management,
Instructional Strategies, Lesson Planning,
Classroom Activities, Practice Teaching, Round
Table Discussions and more.
Trainee Requirements: Participants in our
program range in age from 18 to 80. Most have at
least a bachelor's degree, but we do accept
trainees with equivalent life/professional
experience. If you were educated at a
non-English speaking institution, you must
provide a TOEFL score of at least 100 on the
Internet Based Test (iBT) or at least 250 on the
Computer Based Test (CBT).
Faculty: Two trainers will teach your
workshops and conduct your practice teaching
observations. Our trainers have Master's degrees
in Education or ESL, and extensive experience
teaching English in diverse settings both in the
US and abroad.
Class Size: Our classes are limited to 12
trainees. We keep the class size small so that
our trainees can receive individual attention
from our trainers.
Location: Boston's charm is undeniable -
from the Charles River to Quincy Market and the
waterfront, its neighborhoods, cultural
attractions, and sense of history will delight
you. Our central downtown location enables you
to enjoy Boston’s old-world charm within steps
from our school - the Boston Common and shopping
district are just outside our door!
Job Search Assistance: Our trainers will
help you in your search for a teaching position
that corresponds to your background and
interests. You will attend a workshop that
covers resume writing techniques, internet job
searches, interview preparation, contract
negotiation and review, and cultural adaptation.
You may also schedule a optional one-on-one
counseling session with our Academic Director.
