Curriculum: The Delphi curriculum
contains courses, both required and elective,
designed to help students attain the graduation
requirements of each Form. Academics focus on
providing students with a solid grounding in the
basics, a rich and challenging hands-on
curriculum, and the ability to study
purposefully and independently. We emphasize the
practical use of an education and focus on
getting our students involved in their subjects.
This approach depends on an important ingredient
- we make sure our students learn how to study.
They advance to higher classes based on
demonstrated competence and not age or grade,
and in the process they gradually become
independent, life-long learners.
Lower School - The Lower School
curriculum provides a rich environment that
teaches basic skills and draws a young child
out. The greatest emphasis is placed on reading,
writing and mathematics, surrounded by a broad
experiential program. Academic basics are the
footing upon which an education is built and it
is our primary focus in Lower School. Designed
with an integrated approach, the Lower School
curriculum includes courses in geography,
history, science, music, art, poetry, foreign
language (Spanish), and even communication
skills. With the basics firmly under their
belts, students are able to tackle the rest of
their education with greater confidence.
Elementary School - The Elementary School
academic program focuses on four vital areas:
(1) the basics of reading, writing, and
mathematics; (2) development of study skills;
(3) practical application; and (4) integration
with a broad curriculum, immersing students in
the arts, physical and social sciences, foreign
language and plenty of practical application to
the real world.
Middle School - The focus of the academic
program for Middle School students is to finish
the program in reading, writing, and
mathematics, then move on to the next level of
skill in these areas; study skills should be
finely honed; practical application can lead to
apprenticeships both off and on campus; the
broad curriculum of science (chemistry and
physics), foreign language (choice of French or
Spanish), history, life skills, art, music, and
U.S. geography is further rounded. In history
and government, emphasis will be on
comprehending people, places and events in a
greater global framework as well as focusing on
American history. In Life Skills, students will
take courses in nutrition, manners, ethics,
logic, and economics.
Upper School - Students are encouraged to
delve more deeply into specific areas of
interest. By Form 7, they can decide to focus on
an area, - Business, Science and Technology,
Humanities, and Fine Arts - in which to take
additional courses and get involved in a variety
of practical activities. Apprenticeships, both
off campus and on, are a significant aspect of
those activities, as are Student Government
activities, Student Services and practical
projects. Throughout Forms 7 and 8, students
spend increasingly less time in the courseroom
and more of their time in the "field" involved
in practical application.
Summer Program - Take a wide range of activities, including swimming, sports, arts & crafts, music and gymnastics, add in fun field trips to the beach, Hurricane Harbor, Knott's Berry Farm, Mountasia, LA Dodger games, museums and more, and top it off with week-long camping trips to beautiful destinations including Monterey and San Diego, and you get summer at Delphi; a fast-paced environment where students can have fun, make new friends, and take advantage of the enriching activities we offer. Delphi's summer students also continue to make academic progress. Delphi prepares students for the fall session with a wide variety of subjects to choose from, including hands-on projects in the science lab, a huge library of books, a unique Math Facts on the Computer program to keep students sharp in math, and courses to improve study skills.
International Studies & ESL - Delphi LA
is qualified to issue student visas and accept
international students who wish to study in the
United States. Delphi's student body comprises a
panorama of cultures and ethnicities. Beginning,
Intermediate and Advanced ESL (English as a
Second Language) students may apply for the nine
week summer session. International applicants
who wish to apply for Fall (Autumn) enrollment
must be at least Intermediate or Advanced ESL.
Fall applicants may apply for one year of
enrollment or for several years in order to
continue through Delphi's high school and earn
their diploma in the US.
A description of the curriculum for each school
