Irish Fiddle Holidays for Adults in County Kerry, Ireland
Ever wished you'd learnt to play music? Kerry Fiddles offers Irish fiddle holidays for adults in Kenmare, Co Kerry. Learn the basic techniques of fiddle playing in just one week and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Ring of Kerry.
Courses: Irish fiddle lessons and courses for complete beginners and Level 1 and 2 intermediate.
The beginner courses are designed to give you the best possible introduction to fiddle playing and would be a good grounding for anyone wanting to go on to learn other musical styles/languages - Scottish, Eastern European, Welsh, Bluegrass, Old Timey (and with some theory, Classical or Jazz.)
For Intermediates, it’s a chance to devote a week to your music, to getting new tunes, improving technique and learning how to teach yourself.
Because we do our best learning when we’re relaxed, don’t expect a studious music course. Though we aim to motivate, lay solid foundations and teach effective practice, our main concern is that it’s fun.
Irish music, like other languages, is best learned by ear, so there's next to no musical theory on this course. All group courses are kept small, the atmosphere's informal and tea and cake breaks feature large! Courses are held throughout the year, except for the Christmas week and and New Year.
Morning classes are held at our house, in a spacious music room with great acoustics and mountain views! Though it feels spectacularly remote, we are only 4 miles from Kenmare, in the middle of the most beautiful part of Ireland.
Most evenings will be spent at sessions in and around Kenmare. If there are any gigs on in the Kerry/Cork area we’ll try and get to those too. If you’re up to playing sessions, you’ll be very welcome to join us for tunes on Monday and Tuesday nights in Crowley’s bar.
Fiddle Teacher: Gill Newlyn - Gill taught herself to play in her mid 20’s so knows what nonsense those ‘urban myths’. She’s not put the fiddle down since! She started teaching Irish fiddle full time in 1989 and in the mid 90’s, set up and ran the Irish music school, Bristol Fiddles, where she introduced hundreds of beginners to the music and put on workshops with such masters as: Brendan McGlinchey, Tommy Peoples, Kevin Burke and Paul O'Shaughnessy. Gill played in a World Music band for 6 years, appearing at several WOMAD and Glastonbury festivals. Her fiddle style is a bit of a regional mix, though it’s probably closest to Clare than anything else. Gill has a deep-rooted passion for Irish music and loves to ignite that passion in others.
Accommodation: There are several 5 star hotels, lots of homely bed and breakfasts, a good number of self-catering cottages and loads of guesthouses nearby. There are two very reasonably priced hostels in town with private single and double rooms as well as dormitories. There’s also a campsite just outside town.
