Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu is the largest and most comprehensive university in Estonia, and one of the most venerable centers of education and research in this part of Europe.
Today, the University of Tartu has 10 faculties, 5 regional colleges, and several specialized research institutes. Tartu is home to 17,000 students, including 630 international.
The University of Tartu is famous for research-based education and lively student traditions. It is an active member of international associations such as the Utrecht Network, the Coimbra Group of Universities, and the Baltic Sea Region University Network.
The University of Tartu participates in six out of seven national Centers of Excellence for research. These centers bring together top researchers, maintain strong links to international partners, and include doctoral studies in their remit. Almost 100 Doctoral degrees are conferred each year at the University of Tartu.
