Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu is the largest and most comprehensive university in Estonia, and one of the most venerable centers of education and research in this part of Europe. Today, the University of Tartu has 10 faculties, 5 regional colleges, and several specialized research institutes. Tartu is home to 17,000 students, including 630 international.

Estonia is a modern technologically advanced society, often referred to as E-stonia for pioneering e-services in banking, parking and even government sector. Estonia presents one of the most successful cases of post-Soviet transition to democracy and EU-membership. It is also called a country of 1500 islands and 1000 lakes. Skiing, sauna and singing are favorite pastimes of Estonians.

Tartu is Estonia's second largest city, with population of just over 100 000. It is located 2.5 hours from the airport and sea port of Tallinn, with connections to major cities in Europe and Russia. Tartu is rightfully considered the cultural and intellectual center of Estonia. Students make over 20% of the population, social and student life is very vibrant, and English is spoken widely. it is a true University town!

Tartu, an old Hanseatic town, first mentioned in historical records in 1030, recieved its city rights in 1224. Directions / Instructions:

Estonia is the most northern of the three Baltic States. Direct short flights connect its capital, Tallinn, with many major cities in Europe and Russia. Helsinki is only 80 km to the North across the Gulf of Finland.
University of Tartu is located in southern Estonia, 2.5 hours drive from Tallinn. Buses between Tallinn and Tartu run with intervals of 30-60 minutes, some even offer wireless Internet!
