Northern State University is located in Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota, about 125 miles (200 km) northeast of Pierre. We are committed to providing graduate and undergraduate programs to promote excellence in teaching and learning and to provide service to the State of South Dakota, the region, and the nation. Northern State University serves more than 2200 students representing 36 states. A challenging, multifaceted curriculum offers 38 majors, 42 minors, 6 associate, 8 preprofessional and 9 graduate degree areas. Courses are taught by 120 full-time, dedicated faculty, more than 85 percent of whom have the highest degree possible in their academic field. A student-faculty ratio of 19-to-1 ensures that students have access to their professors, and a student-to- computer ratio of 4.7-to-1 is one of the best access-to-technology ratios in the nation.

Residence Life:

Our Residence Life program is a vital component of the educational experience at NSU. To successfully achieve its mission and goals, the Residence Life Staff provides not only safe, clean, and secure housing, but a variety of opportunities to form relationships and help residents become members of the community.


Residence Halls:

Residence HallsThere are six residence halls on campus, each with top facilities:

Jerde Hall:
A co-ed residence hall, Jerde Hall can house 355 students and is complete with its own dining hall and kitchen. It also houses three learning communities (Transition and the PASS Programs) Students sharing a common interest are housed together with a student mentor who helps facilitate the academic growth of the members of the community. The building is named for Dr. Walter Jerde, professor and dean of education, who served the NSU campus from 1947 until his retirement in 1966.

The free laundry facilities are located in the basement, as is a lounge and game room with pool tables and a TV. There are lounges on every floor, some of which include kitchens. The main lobby is found on first floor. This is also the location of a study room, a foosball table, the hall office, and the hall director's apartment. The computer lab, connected to the campus network, includes a laser jet printer and is also found on first floor. Jerde is a smoke free environment.

The NSU tennis courts are behind the building. Jerde is close to the Barnett Center (NSU's fitness and sports complex) and the Johnson Fine Arts Center. There are on-line computer hookups in all student rooms. All rooms have fee-for-service cable TV access and a telephone jack.


Activities and Programs:

More than a hundred clubs and activity groups help students pursue their talents and interests and develop their leadership skills. Northern State is home of the Wolves, who are affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the national level and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on the regional level. Northern also boasts Marching Wolves, the only marching band in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Extracurricular activities include a wide variety of entertainment and cultural events weekly. Among student organizations there are social and professional groups, community service and religious groups, and student-run publications and campus government.
