The extensive combined honours programme allows flexibility of study. Graduation ceremonies take place in Canterbury Cathedral, Kent's most famous and spectacular building.
The University also hosts international students on English language preparation courses, Erasmus exchange programmes and USA Study Abroad programmes.
Teaching programmes
The Faculty of Education provides a wide range of high quality and innovative initial teacher education programmes. We have large, dynamic teams of staff much valued by student teachers, especially for the support they provide, and mature, successful partnerships with hundreds of schools in Kent, Medway, London and further afield. The Faculty
welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is strongly committed to equal opportunities and race equality.
The Faculty has consistently received the highest possible Ofsted grades for its Primary ITE programmes, and has also been awarded the top grade for the management and quality assurance of its Secondary provision. We believe our success is linked to our flexibility in providing programmes to suit many different needs, a focus on creativity and the critical analysis of classroom practice, and above all an emphasis on how teachers can engage, inspire and promote learning in all their pupils.
We offer undergraduate routes which lead directly to teaching qualifications in Primary and Secondary education, and full details of these are provided in this prospectus. We also provide an extensive range of postgraduate teaching qualifications. Since some students choose to enter teaching by first taking an undergraduate degree in an appropriate subject and then qualifying as a teacher through a separate programme, some headline information about these programmes is provided below: the University’s Postgraduate prospectus provides full details. The University also provides ongoing professional support for teachers in post through its Masters programmes, so choosing to train as a teacher with us can be the start of long term relationship.

Nursing Programmes
BSc (Honours) in Adult Nursing
There is an annual intake each September at the Canterbury Campus for the BSc (Honours) in Adult Nursing. The Diploma of Higher Education programme is offered in September and April each year at Canterbury and Medway. The part-time Diploma course is currently only offered at Canterbury.
This three year full-time interprofessional programme is divided into two parts. Level 1 consists of a Common Foundation Programme (CFP) which is a broad preparation for nursing and is grounded in health w
ith Biological and Behavioural Sciences and Nursing Studies as the main disciplines. Levels 2 and 3 consists of the Branch Programme in Adult Nursing.
The programme prepares students for the award of BSc (Honours) Nursing studies or Diploma of Higher Education (Nursing Studies) and for eligibility for entry to the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Register.
The part-time Diploma programme is divided into 3 year CFP and 3 year branch programme (Adult Nursing). The part-time route is only available at the Canterbury Campus and has April and September start dates. The intake for the Degree programme is only offered at the Canterbury Campus. The Diploma has intakes in September and April at Canterbury and Medway.
Content and Structure
The programme is an interprofessional learning programme with some modules shared with other health professionals and some Nursing specific. The programme runs for 45 weeks per year and holiday times are predetermined. Vacation times are in the summer, at Christmas and Easter, but not at school half terms. The overall balance is 50% theory and 50% practice.
There is a statutory requirement for nursing students to gain 2300 hours in each aspect so attendance throughout the programme is obligatory. Students who miss in excess of three weeks through sickness/absence will have the programme interrupted. Shorter absences from practice placements may be made up within the programme.
The University day is from 09.00 to 19.00 and although students may be taught at any time of the day or evening, maximum teaching each day is six hours. Each intake of students is divided into smaller groups, students normally study in the University for approximately five weeks followed by five weeks in clinical placements.
PRACTICE PLACEMENTS
Students will experience clinical placements in hospitals and in the community, where they begin as observers moving to participation. Students will be allocated a Practice Supervisor.
Child Nursing
The University offers a three year full-time and six year part-time programme in Nursing Studies for those wishing to become children’s nurses. Within this programme the Child Nursing pathway can be undertaken at two levels; Diploma and Degree. The pathway prepares students for the award of DipHE/BSc (Hons) Child Nursing and for eligibility for entry to on to the NMC register as a Registered Nurse (Child).
The aim of the Child Nursing Pathway is to produce children’s nurses who are able to deliver high quality care to children, young people and their families. This care may be delivered in hospital, in the child’s home or in the wider community such as schools and clinics, in collaboration with other health and social care professionals.
Content and Structure
The Child Nursing Pathway in the Interprofessional Learning Programme is 156 weeks in length for fulltime students. There is an annual intake each September at the Canterbury Campus for the degree pathway, and April at the Medway Campus for the diploma pathway. The main difference between the diploma and degree programmes is in year three, when the diploma students undertake five modules rather than six, and the degree students are expected to work at a higher academic level.
At Level 1, three of the modules
are shared with students from other health and social care professions. The remaining three modules are undertaken with students from Adult Nursing and Mental Health pathways as a Common Foundation Programme for all nursing students.
Level 2 provides the opportunity to develop a depth of understanding of child development, childhood illness and disability and child health psychology within four child nursing courses. The remaining two courses allow the student to develop an understanding of research methods and social policy and how these impact on children’s nursing.
Level 3 provides additional opportunities for the development of child nursing skills within neonatal and high dependency care, and caring for the child with cancer or life limiting disorders. These are challenging areas in which to work and will enable students to develop the skills necessary to support children and families at times of stress/distress. Level 3 also offers the student the opportunity to work as part of an interprofessional team in practice.
PRACTICE PLACEMENT
Experience in practice constitutes 50% of the programme and links directly with the taught modules. Placements will take place in a variety of settings both in hospital and the community. Students will be allocated to a children’s ward which will normally be their base ward for the whole of the programme. During their placements students will be provided with a named supervisor(s) who will support them during their practice placements. Initially students will observe qualified practitioners and will gradually begin to participate in care delivery as their knowledge and skills increase.
