The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is a fully accredited public university established in 1874. As the oldest institution of higher education in the State of Nevada, the university has a long tradition of academic excellence. The Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) promotes mutual understanding between Nevadans and citizens of other nations by encouraging students and researchers from other nations to come to Nevada. The staff at the OISS provides information and advice regarding visa categories, international student admission, employment options, and cultural adjustment. ProGeneral Contact Pagegrams, workshops, and activities are offered that foster intercultural understanding and enhance the skills needed to be successful in an increasingly interconnected world.

The university's approximate 16,000 students come from all over the United States and represent 1,000 international students and faculty from 80 countries. Students can choose from world-renowned programs leading to over 70 undergraduate (Bachelor's- BA, BS) and graduate (Master's- MA, MS and Doctoral- Ph.D.) degrees offered in the colleges and schools of business, education, science, agriculture, administration, liberal arts, biotechnology and natural resources, journalism, human and community services, engineering and graduate studies.

Reno is a safe and beautiful city with a population of approximately 450,000, with a mild, dry climate where the sun shines 300 days a year. The region is alpine and semiarid. Reno sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range; there are numerous outdoor opportunities, including rock-climbing, skiing, snowboarding, sailing, camping, hiking, fishing, and mountain-biking. Amazing Lake Tahoe is only a 40 minute drive from Reno, and there are numerous ski areas within an hour’s drive – including Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics! Summers (June through mid-September) are usually hot, dry and sunny. Winters (mid-December through March) are usually cold, but clear and sunny as well.
