The Vancouver Career College early childhood education program (of 43 weeks) combines theory and practical knowledge to prepare you for this highly rewarding career. The core curriculum focuses on child growth and development, relationship building, behaviour management, guidance skills, health, safety and program planning. Students also learn how to use art, drama, music and movement to enable learning. Students can also apply for an Assistant Licence to become an Assistant through the Early Childhood Education Registry after completing the required courses. Hands-on training is also an important part of the program, with a number of observation modules designed so that students work with trained educators and Vancouver Career College faculty.
There is great demand in most communities for enthusiastic and well-trained childcare graduates to fill a variety of dynamic positions in Early Childhood Education. Graduates of this program are ready to embark on childcare careers in both the non-profit and profit sectors, including in preschools, nursery schools, day cares services, and family service centres.
Early Childhood Education - Infant/Toddler & Special Needs Programs:
This is an extension of our basic Early Childhood Education program. You must be a certified Early Childhood Educator or in the process of completing the required 500 hours of work experience, in order to enroll. Courses in this program allow you to specialize in two very important areas of childcare, and increase your opportunities for career and educational advancement as an ECE graduate. Courses are offered on a full-time basis, five days per week. Classes are half days in order for you to complete the course and be employed as ECE practitioners.
You may specialize in one of two areas: Infant/ Toddler Specialization (working with children under three years old) and Special Needs Specialization (working with children who require extra educational support). Individual areas of specialization require the completion of seven courses and one practicum (period of work placement experience). Total specialization requires completion of all nine courses and two practicum placements.
These advanced courses will quickly lead you to a License to Practice as a Special Needs Educator or a License to Practice as an Infant/ Toddler Educator.
