Liden & Denz, St. Petersburg:
Whatever your reasons for learning Russian today, you are in good company. Interest in the language of Pushkin and Tolstoy is no longer confined to the academic world. The Liden & Denz Language Centre in St. Petersburg offers Russian language courses for academic, leisure or business purposes. Our internationally accredited language school combines excellent teaching with modern facilities and a competent organisation. It is our aim to familiarise all our students with today’s Russia, in terms of language, culturally and emotionally.
Liden & Denz is the only Russian members of the International Association of Language Centres IALC. In 2007, Liden & Denz St.Petersburg became the first school in Russia to join EAQUALS, the European Association for Quality Language Services. Our centres are licensed by the local governments as private language schools teaching Russian as a foreign language. Our courses are recognised as Bildungsurlaub (Germany), CSN partners (Sweden) and students studying with Liden & Denz can receive transferable university credits from Brookhaven College (USA).
All our courses are based on communicative approaches and combine learning common expressions used in everyday situations with thorough and systematic grammatical approach. This is of vital importance for learning a language like Russian, which has an inflectional system and a non-fixed word order – a language in which word endings or word's place create the meaning.
Conversational topics are given with appropriate grammar structures, while the grammar part of the course proceeds gradually from simple "basic concepts" to more complex issues in a psychologically proven order (e.g. naming objects - describing locations - actions with objects - moving to and from, etc.). One of our most important principles consists in giving our students the linguistic means to express themselves in everyday situations by constant training of communicative skills and models, which allows learners to reach their own communicative objectives.
All our teachers are native speakers and hold a university degree either in Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language (RKI) or Linguistics. We encourage our teachers to learn new languages, because we believe that having this experience as students is a valuable source for further improvement of their professional skills.
For our students we usually organise home stay, which is considered to be the most popular type of accommodation. We offer two packages for this type of accommodation: breakfast only and half board (breakfast and dinner). We also offer shared flats (single room/no board), hotels at attractive prices in all categories or help rent an apartment according to your requirements.
Tourist visa: For students wishing to study four weeks or less, we will arrange a simple invitation which entitles the student to apply for a tourist visa. The tourist visa is valid for one entry and for maximum 30 days. A tourist visa cannot be prolonged.
Short-term student visa: Students wishing to study more than four weeks need to apply for a student visa. The student visa is valid for one entry and for maximum 90 days. In this case the invitation will be issued by the Russian Ministry of Interior Affairs. This procedure takes up to four weeks.
Arrival Transfer (free of charge)
All our students are met at the airport, railway or bus stations by a school representative carrying a 'Liden & Denz' sign and taken straight to their host family or other point of destination. Upon arrival all our students receive a welcome package with detailed information about their stay.
Arrival transfers are included in the course fees if accommodation is booked via the school.
Some activities are free, such as the city tour for new students and our Friday cocktail. We book tickets for many different cultural events, from ballet to open-air concerts or football matches. A booking fee is payable. We also sell train and air tickets for weekend trips and can book hotels in other parts of Russia. This service is only available in St.Petersburg.
After reviewing all the schools available to me to study Russian in St Petersburg I decided to choose Liden & Denz after learning of the school’s facilities, experience and reputation, and, I am happy to say, the school completely met my expectations and more.
I was slightly nervous and apprehensive about heading to Russian and felt that a school with a strong international intake of students would ease my transition and it was. The school is well furbished and equipped and has its own canteen which is a great place to meet with other students and socialize and reflect on the agonizing process of studying Russian.
At the beginning of my course, the prospect of successfully studying Russian seemed daunting and unobtainable but the classes, whilst being demanding, were engaging and supportive and ensured that I progressed rapidly. Living with a friendly host family who were more than happy to tolerate my clumsy, messy Russian has further helped my linguistic development.
In addition to the classes, the school organizes numerous cultural and social events every week, which ensure that when you first take plunge into the city you will be able to do so with other people in the same position as you. It also offers an opportunity to be fairly dependant on the school until you have enough confidence, or Russian competency, to boldly strut the streets of St Petersburg independently.
I thoroughly recommend Liden & Denz to anyone studying in St Petersburg, the city is a sumptuous slice of European culture and the school has complemented and enhanced my entire experience.

I started my studies at Liden & Denz in November 2008. Before that I knew almost nothing about Russian culture, life in the real Russia outside the Swedish media image, and I couldn’t speak any Russian at all. Today, “Piter” is like a second home to me, I feel very comfortable in school, learning and making friends from all over the world. I try very hard not to think about that I have to go back to Sweden in May. Piter is my favourite city now, and living and studying here is an experience, not only educationally and culturally, but also an experience of personal growth.
