To apply for this position follow the link below:  GENERAL DESCRIPTION Under general supervision to perform a variety of skilled work in the repair, overhaul, and preventive maintenance of a variety of vehicular and other mechanical equipment. Incumbents inspect, troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and exhaust systems while ensuring equipment operates safely and efficiently. Duties include operating and test-driving commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, maintaining accurate maintenance records, supporting parts procurement, and adhering to established safety standards and procedures.

Employees work in physically demanding environments with exposure to outdoor conditions, mechanical hazards, chemicals, noise, and confined spaces, and may be required to respond as essential personnel during City emergencies or closures. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Equipment Mechanic Trainee I/II Exercises no supervision. Equipment Mechanic III Exercise limited supervision as outlined by supervisor. IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Inspect, repair, and perform diagnostic checks and troubleshooting techniques on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles including landscaping and construction equipment.

Overhaul and/or repair components such as clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, universal joints, air conditioning, motor ignitions, carburetors, and electrical and hydraulic systems vehicles such as trucks, trailers, street sweepers, tractors, skid loaders, backhoes, and other equipment as needed. Adjust, repair, and replace necessary units and components, including but not limited to valves, pistons, brakes, hoses, body parts, switches, hydraulic cylinders, engine components, and fuel and exhaust system components.

Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs in Fleet Maintenance software. Provide Parts staff with complete and accurate information when ordering repair parts. Maintain personal and common work areas according to established safety standards. Execute tire mounting and dismounting, as well as rotating and balancing tires. Operate or test drive heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, medium and light vehicles as well as a fuel truck.

Operation of equipment and vehicles is required for diagnosis and verification of repair. Operate a fuel truck to perform fuel service calls. Replace logos, decals, and placards as needed. Equipment Mechanic III Provide day-to-day guidance, training, and technical assistance to Equipment Mechanic Trainees, Equipment Mechanic I, and Equipment Mechanic II employees. Assign, prioritize, and review work activities to ensure repairs and preventive maintenance tasks are completed accurately, safely, and efficiently.

Assist supervisors in monitoring workflow, shop operations, productivity, and quality of work performed by assigned staff. Serve as a lead mechanic on complex repairs, diagnostics, and troubleshooting assignments involving heavy equipment and specialized vehicles. Inspect completed repairs and maintenance work to ensure compliance with departmental standards, safety requirements, and operational expectations. Train and mentor employees on proper repair procedures, diagnostic techniques, safety practices, and operation of specialized tools and equipment.

Provide input to supervisors regarding employee performance, training needs, work quality, and operational concerns. Coordinate with staff and other divisions to ensure timely availability of parts, equipment, and resources needed for repairs and maintenance activities. Promote and enforce adherence to safety standards, departmental policies, and established maintenance procedures. Assist in maintaining shop organization, cleanliness, tool accountability, and compliance with applicable environmental and safety regulations.

Advanced methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul, and preventive maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, heavy equipment, and hydraulic systems. Principles and practices of automotive, diesel, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, exhaust, and air conditioning systems. Diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques for identifying mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational equipment failures. Operation and maintenance requirements of commercial vehicles, construction equipment, landscaping equipment, refuse trucks, fuel trucks, tractors, skid loaders, street sweepers, trailers, and related heavy equipment.

Preventive maintenance programs and inspection procedures designed to maximize equipment reliability, efficiency, and safety. Applicable federal, state, local, and departmental safety standards, environmental regulations, and hazardous material handling procedures related to fleet maintenance operations.
