Mechatronics Engineer - Intern

Position: Mechatronics Engineer – Intern.
Department: Engineering.
Type: Full‑Time.
Reports to: Chief Engineer.
Status: Non‑Exempt.

The internship provides hands‑on experience in design, development, and implementation of mechanical and electronic systems for manufacturing automation, aiming to support the future of Astemo Rock Spring. The goal is to gain knowledge to become a future member of the Engineering team, contributing to cost, quality, safety, and delivery improvements.

• Assist in developing electronic and mechanical systems for manufacturing and automation.
• Research Automation and Controls materials and best practices.
• Design and troubleshoot wiring diagrams for new and existing equipment.
• Design and troubleshoot mechanical and control systems, including PLC logic for Omron, Allen‑Bradley, and Mitsubishi.
• Develop HMI applications for continuous improvement and equipment modification.
• Support troubleshooting of equipment, providing improvements to prevent reoccurring failures.
• Develop bid documentation and scopes of work for vendors across Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, and Low‑Voltage domains.
• Update specifications and operating procedures for new and existing equipment.
• Interface and assist in managing installation contractors during new equipment installations.
• Teach and train Technical Support members and Engineers.
• Support implementation of IoT and cloud‑based connectivity for equipment.
• Champion safety compliance, environmental initiatives, and quality control measures.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams on production flow and delivery performance.
• Identify productivity improvement opportunities and implement efficiency measures.
• Provide regular updates to the Chief Engineer on work progress, key metrics, and improvement initiatives.

• Enthusiastic self‑starter with strong willingness to learn and grow.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Good verbal communication skills.
• Basic understanding of PLCs, HMI design, controls design, and manufacturing processes.
• Proficiency with data analysis tools, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
• Solid understanding of engineering principles and technical concepts.
• Working toward an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, electrical engineering, or related field.
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills, capable of interpreting technical data.
• Experience with engineering software for process design, simulation, and optimization (preferred).

Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, standing for extended periods, performing physically demanding tasks, and occasionally lifting heavy objects. The internship duration may be adjusted based on academic requirements and company needs.
