Job Summary

The Instructional Assistant 1 is a pooled, part‑time position that serves the college‑wide Student Help Desk. Responsibilities include resolving students’ software and hardware problems, coaching students one‑on‑one and in small groups on digital literacy and advanced application use, performing technical work on software and hardware projects, and maintaining the computer lab.

Essential Duties
  • Assist Librarian/Computer Lab Specialists on software and hardware projects, including replacing and configuring hardware, and maintaining the operational condition of equipment (network, software, and hardware).
  • Help students with software and hardware problems, provide instructional and lab support for applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, internet searches, electronic mail, and more; develop training aids and signage for computers; refer students to faculty when appropriate; report non‑compliance with policy or procedures.
  • Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs on computers and equipment; monitor equipment usage; assist with preventive maintenance and scheduled cleaning; replenish supplies and prioritize work to manage time effectively.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Skills and Abilities

    • Good arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate a keyboard and office equipment.
    • Sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate effectively with staff and students.
    • Visual acuity to read numbers and words.
    • Ability to lift and navigate light to medium (10–50 pounds) equipment; ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, and crawl.

    Working Conditions

    • Work is performed indoors in a highly visible, busy, interruption‑filled library with minimal exposure to safety and health hazards.
    • Work activities rotate between sitting at a computer station and walking to and from student computer stations; substantial time is spent working at a computer.
    • Position may also include scheduled shifts working remotely.
    Education and Experience
    • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
    • Experience, education, or demonstrable knowledge in a computer or technical help desk field.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Thorough understanding of the operation and maintenance of computers and software programs, including Windows, Microsoft products, printers, scanners, wireless network, cloud storage, video conferencing, and email; ability to address student questions or problems.
    • Well‑developed interpersonal communication and customer service skills to interact with a diverse community.
    • Ability to maintain the lab and equipment safely and in an organized manner; ability to instruct students in using equipment and programs.
    • Ability to learn new software as needed.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively despite frequent interruptions.
    • An educational approach focused on helping students learn to help themselves rather than a problem‑solving approach is preferred.
    • Spanish language fluency is preferred.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Compensation is based on the Part‑time Classified Salary Schedule and may increase annually. Part‑time Classified employees are paid monthly.
