Classification Title of Job
Juvenile Work Program Officer 1/2 (Classification 618/619, Range 14/16 DOE) Full‑time SEIU UNION position working 37.5 hours per week. 4‑day work‑week schedule:
Monday – Thursday (June–September), Friday–Monday (September–June). English‑Spanish BILINGUAL PREFERRED.
- Supervise, train, and monitor juveniles involved with the Work Services Program in a variety of labor‑oriented, community‑based, and vocational activities in accordance with established policies and procedures. Handle emergency situations, disciplinary issues and crisis intervention including but not limited to physical restraint.
- Safely transport juveniles to and from project locations while operating a county‑owned sport utility vehicle with a utility trailer. Responsible for safely loading/unloading tools and equipment needed for each work crew assignment.
- Provide juveniles with the necessary tools and safety equipment to perform assigned work and utilize the tools and equipment safely. Demonstrate to each juvenile the correct methods for performing assigned tasks and verbally instruct them in safety practices required to maintain a safe work environment.
- Safely operate, clean, and maintain powered and non‑powered tools to include chainsaw, weed‑eater, chipper, lawnmower, wheelbarrow, etc.
- Maintain clean work spaces, which include but are not limited to vehicles, trailers, storage facilities, worksites, and office spaces.
- Responsible for the safety and security of juveniles involved with the Work Services Program by exercising sound judgement, maintaining visual & audible supervision, and utilizing verbal & physical control in compliance with policies and procedures. Conduct daily searches of juveniles to provide a productive and secure environment.
- Provide orientation to incoming juveniles and their families regarding program policies and procedures through group and individual presentations.
- Document and maintain accurate and complete records and daily evaluations of work performed by juveniles involved with the Work Services Program. Maintain regular communication with probation officers both orally and through written reports on compliance and non‑compliance with the Work Services Program policies and procedures.
- Supervise and write daily evaluations of individual juvenile’s behavior and performance within the Work Services Program, as observed via daily contact and supervision methods including daily evaluations and scoring, and behavior and incident reports, as required.
- Assist in the training, direction of the daily activities and review of paperwork prepared by new and temporary employees, practicum students, and volunteers.
- Maintain required training certifications, which include but are not limited to 1st Aid/CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens Training, Epinephrine Administration, and Medication Dispensation.
- Develop and maintain effective, harmonious, professional, and cooperative working relationships with coworkers, clients, families, partner agencies, and the public.
- Abide by department and county policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Maintain regular and predictable work attendance.
- Other work duties as assigned.
Reports directly to the Community Programs & Work Crew Program Manager, may receive direction from other management team members.
Necessary Special Qualifications- Previous volunteer or professional experience in a social service agency, preferably in an agency within the juvenile justice system.
- Graduation from a four‑year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences; i.e., Sociology, Psychology, Counseling, etc., OR satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the work described.
Special Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age or older upon date of hire.
- Must possess or obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Class C Oregon Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record. Unacceptable driving record may disqualify potential candidates.
Successful candidates will be required to pass an extensive background investigation, including national fingerprint records check, ODHS records check, and a pre‑employment drug screen.
