Job Description

At-will basis, pending student enrollment in August 2026

  • Interpret in educational settings and other related situations
  • Assist the teacher with the instruction of students who are D/HH by utilizing signed language, speech, and amplification; accept the teacher as the authority in the classroom
  • Demonstrate skills in communicating with students who are D/HH on many different levels of understanding
  • Assist the teacher in developing language, thinking and independent skills in students who are D/HH
  • When necessary, under the direction and supervision of the teacher, review material, with the student who is D/HH, recently presented in class, introduce new vocabulary, and establish signs for vocabulary in upcoming lessons
  • Conduct group and individual activities with students under the direction and supervision of the teacher
  • Assist mainstreamed students in developing study skills, completing projects or assignments, or reviewing for classes as necessary (this may include tutoring as directed by the teacher)
  • Provide communication between mainstreamed teacher and teacher of the deaf
  • Check hearing aids and hearing assistive technology and record/report problems
  • Assist students who are D/HH with speech practices and auditory training
  • Be familiar with all materials used in the classroom as well as those available in the RDSPD library
  • Be positive and pleasant when working with students
  • Exercise firm but kind control of students’ behavior, abiding by the teacher’s policy
  • Assist students in developing appropriate behavior in all school settings (including playground, halls, bathroom, lunchroom, library, and other areas)
  • Assist students in developing independence and self-reliance within the school setting
  • Facilitate communication for student who are D/HH during assemblies, concerts, ceremonies, field trips and as needed in other school activities and school environments.
  • Operate audio‑visual and classroom equipment
  • Maintain professional work standards of punctuality, dress, and confidentiality
  • Complete and submit service delivery logs as reflected in IEP
  • Refer questions about the students in the program to the teacher and maintain all aspects of student confidentiality
  • Be flexible and willing to adjust schedules to meet immediate needs of auditorily‑impaired students on a daily basis
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff development with RDSPD in signed language and other areas germane to the education of auditorily‑impaired students
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the RDSPD or school principal
Education/Certification

Associate degree or at least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university or eligible for Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) exemption; BEI Interpreter Certification through Texas Commission for the Deaf (required) or Associate in Interpreter Training Program

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and ability to communicate with students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH)
  • Command of sign language systems and vocabulary used by students and the educational program
  • Some experience in working with children
  • Temperament to work with students who are D/HH and other disabilities
  • Ability to work in tandem with the classroom teacher in providing communication assistance for students who are D/HH
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with teacher(s) and students
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
