Job Description

Primary

Purpose:

Direct and manage the district’s special education program, ensuring services are provided for special needs students and individualized education plans meet all student needs. Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local requirements.

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Instructional and Program Management
    • Oversee development and delivery of special education curriculum and instructional programs aligned with district goals.
    • Ensure continuous curriculum renewal responsive to student needs.
    • Develop and implement effective referral process and timely assessment, recommendations, placements.
    • Monitor district wide admission, review, dismissal processes; support committee meetings.
    • Use assessment data to evaluate program effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
    • Secure resources, materials, technology, and encourage innovative instruction.
    • Direct transition services for students entering and exiting public programs.
    • Formulate and implement contracts for out‑of‑district services.
  • Student Management
    • Support district student management policies and expected behaviors for special education.
  • Policy, Reports, and Law
    • Implement policies per federal, state, and local law; recommend improvements.
    • Compile, maintain, file all required reports and records.
    • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Budget and Inventory
    • Develop and administer special education budget; ensure cost‑effective operations.
    • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; recommend replacements or disposal.
  • Personnel Management
    • Revise job descriptions; select, train, supervise, evaluate staff; recommend hiring/firing.
  • Communication and Community Relations
    • Build relationships with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community members.
    • Serve as liaison with community agencies; notify parents of available services.
    • Articulate district mission and goals; solicit community support.
    • Initiate activities to meet community‑needs.
    • Encourage parent and community involvement.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervise, evaluate, and recommend hiring/firing of special education support staff.
Job Requirements
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
