What You'll Do
As a Building Official, you will be responsible for ensuring construction are executed in accordance with safety, quality, and code requirements. The Building Official serves as the Manager and Subject Matter Expert for building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes and applies that knowledge to support compliance, efficient project execution.
This position provides leadership for the program and assigned staff by setting clear expectations, establishing priorities, and driving continuous improvement in processing and performance. The role includes reviewing construction plans, issuing approvals, identifying (and correcting) deficiencies, and provides field oversight when needed. It also requires maintaining complete and accurate records, preparing reports, supporting program administration, and driving effective day to day operations.
You will work closely with other internal organizations, project teams, and various customers and work to build relationships through proactive effort. Along with soliciting feedback from these areas and other stakeholders to resolve issues, improve processes, and identify and roadblocks to implementation. Additionally, participation in strategic initiatives and special projects may be required to broader operating knowledge of the site is preferred.
Success in this this role requires strong working knowledge of local, state, and federal building-related codes and the ability to interpret, and practically apply them to site construction activities. In tandem with this, practical knowledge of construction methods and field execution are required as this allows for effective, inspection, noncompliant condition identification, and the ability to coordinate and propose effective corrective actions.
To pull it all together, strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical requirements clearly and to a varied audience is a cornerstone to this role.
Key Responsibilities
* Participate in pre-development and pre-construction meetings to answer questions and advise design professionals, contractors, developers, and the public relative to interpretation and application of the building codes.
* Develop administrative and operational policies and procedures to ensure efficient operations of the department.
* Inspect new and existing commercial structures for compliance with all adopted building codes
* Performs certificate of occupancy inspections for new and existing commercial projects
* Reviews commercial construction plans
* Documents deficiencies and deviations from approved plans; generate electronic inspection reports
* Maintain computer records and reports concerning inspections, licenses, permits, certificates, etc
* Prepare and write departmental reports and correspondence
* Provides excellent communication; answers questions and concerns related to building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and safety codes and requirements; consults with engineers, architects, and contractors concerning deficiencies with technical requirements
* Assists Code Enforcement with building related complaints and inspections
* Coordinates and advises other departments in matters related to building construction and code requirements
* Assists in the preparation and administration of the department budget
* Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum
Job Requirements
* Bachelor's Degree and minimum 7 years of relevant experience
* OR applicants without a bachelor's degree may be considered based on a combination of at least 15 years of completed education and/or relevant experience
Department of Energy Order 426.2A Requirements
In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 4 years job-related, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.

Job Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents thru ABET Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA)
* A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is preferred for up to four years post-graduation, confirmed by transcript at the time of offer. Beyond four years from graduation, relevant experience will supersede GPA in hiring considerations.
* Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA
* Master's degree with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA
* PhD with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA
