Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum and research complex, offers several Postdoctoral Fellowships annually to outstanding early career scientists.  The Smithsonian’s distinctive combination of field research facilities, museum archives, and expertise in ecology, biological conservation, and systematics provides opportunities for synthetic, big-picture insights into some of the most profound issues challenging our world today, including habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species.
Scientists at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland conduct environmental research in temperate, tropical, and polar ecosystems across the globe. Recent research has highlighted the separate and interactive impacts of multiple global change factors on populations, communities, and ecosystems, including climate change, biological invasions, biodiversity loss, conservations science, nutrient loading, trace element pollution, and habitat alteration.  Insights gained in these studies will be crucial to developing science-based conservation plans that allow human societies to thrive while protecting our finite natural resources.
Smithsonian Fellows receive an annual stipend of $50,400 plus health, relocation, and research allowances.  Each position is expected to run for two years, with the second year of funding contingent upon satisfactory progress.  Applicants are encouraged to coordinate with a SERC scientist prior to submitting an application for this competitively-awarded fellowship.  Applications are due November 1st.

Please contact Professional Training Coordinator Daniel Gustafson at (Please contact us using the "Apply for this Job Posting" box below), or 443-482-2217 for further details.

Two specialized fellowships are also available this year:

Applicants proposing to study non-US indigenous fauna (including those invasive in the US) will be considered for the Bacon Fellowship.
Applicants are encouraged to propose synthetic projects that engage two or more SERC sponsors, but single-sponsor proposals are also welcomed.

Postdoctoral Fellows proposing to do research in microbial ecology () and who apply to the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program under a SERC sponsor will also be considered for a separate 2-year position.
