The Research Technician (Evans Lab) will perform experiments as part of a pre‑clinical neuroscience team focused on understanding how light modulates the brain. In addition, this individual will gather and analyze experimental data, help organize inventory, and help to train and supervise student volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform lab work related to the execution of ongoing research projects, including reagent preparation, molecular/cellular/behavioral/physiological assays, and small animal surgery. Interpret data, troubleshoot technical problems, and keep accurate records of experimental procedures.
  • Perform animal colony management and execute day‑to‑day operations in transgenic rodent colonies. Responsibilities include husbandry, handling, breeding, genotyping, weaning, euthanasia, and record keeping. Coordinate with other lab members to identify needed cohorts of animals, design experiments, and maintain a high quality of research.
  • Analyze experimental data, prepare figures to visualize results, and communicate findings during lab meetings.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and licensure for federal, state, and university requirements in relation to the use of animals, biohazardous materials, and controlled substances for research.
  • Train and oversee student volunteers and lab personnel with different levels of research experience (undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees).
  • Complete laboratory‑related purchases using the Marquette University purchasing system and maintain proper inventory of research related items.
  • Required Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities
    • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Neuroscience, or Biomedical Science.
    • A minimum of one year of experience working in a similar position.
    • Ability to work well in a team in a professional setting, demonstrate initiative, excellent time management skills, technical proficiency, and effective communication.
    • Ability to conduct preclinical research with rodents.
    Preferred Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities
    • Prior knowledge of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, and/or small‑animal husbandry.
    • Hands‑on experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, or related discipline.
    • Research experience includes working with transgenic animal models, performing genotyping, PCR, Western blot, and cell culture.
    • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to perform occasional evening or weekend work due to the nature of our research program.
    • A commitment of 1‑2 years is preferred.
