Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager (Nonprofit)

Location: Arlington, VA (Ballston – Metro Accessible)
Schedule: Primarily onsite (5 days/week) with some flexibility

A well-established, mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking a Senior Accountant to join its growing finance team. This organization is dedicated to advancing civic engagement and educational programming nationwide, supporting students and educators through impactful, real-world learning experiences.

With over 100 employees and a collaborative accounting team of four, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional looking to make a meaningful impact while growing into leadership. The hiring manager is open to leveling this role up to Accounting Manager for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support month-end close processes
  • Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations
  • Assist with revenue recognition processes
  • Contribute to automation initiatives across AP and payment workflows
  • Support grant accounting and compliance
  • Partner cross-functionally to improve financial processes and reporting
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • CPA or CPA in progress strongly preferred
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting required
  • Knowledge of grant accounting and compliance
  • Strong understanding of fixed assets and depreciation (seeking an internal subject matter expert)
  • Systems-savvy with a process improvement mindset
