Position: (Pool) Summer Better Than Others Instructor

Position Summary

Pool of temporary summer camp instructor positions at Southern Oregon University. Qualified applicants will be considered for part‑time, limited‑duration appointments. Appointment details vary in salary, length, supervisory status, and program support. Appointment basis: temporary/short‑term; time type: part‑time; start date:
April 17, 2026; hourly rate: $36.00. Candidates must be able to legally work in the United States. This position is not a necessary security‑sensitive role.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a 5‑day curriculum for a class of students of a specified age.
  • Work one or two classes per week and between 1‑5 weeks during the summer.
  • Create age‑appropriate, engaging, critical‑thinking and project‑based learning experiences.
  • Prepare classroom and supplies before each session.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early and remain until the end of each session, ensuring safe transition of students.
  • Maintain a climate that respects all persons, upholds camp policies, and manages behavior.
  • Complete daily attendance records and report attendance issues.
  • Maintain communication with the program coordinator and provide detailed daily lesson plans.
  • Provide materials lists and supervise use of SOU spaces and equipment.
  • Report damaged spaces, equipment or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Respond promptly to all communications and participate in required Instructor Orientation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Pass a background check.
  • Passion for teaching young students.
  • At least 1 year of experience with the subject matter (in the last year of under‑graduate status or age 20 and older).
  • Ability to create age‑appropriate, engaging curriculum for a 5‑day class.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A college degree.
  • At least 1 year of professional teaching experience in a classroom setting.
  • Experience teaching students with physical or mental disabilities.
Essential Functions
  • Age‑appropriate curriculum creation (10%) – design curriculum that fits within time constraints and encourages critical thinking and project‑based learning.
  • Classroom preparation and supervision (85%) – prepare supplies, arrive early, manage behavior, maintain attendance records, uphold policies, communicate with coordinator, prepare lesson plans, supervise spaces, and report issues.
  • Email and communication (5%) – respond to all emails and communications in a timely manner.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey information clearly.
  • High productivity with attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, maintain a positive and cooperative environment, and create community‑oriented relationships among a diverse student body.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, or the ability to learn them quickly.
Physical Demands
  • Sit or stand for up to an hour at a time.
  • Move or transport up to 30 pounds.
  • Pull a wagon full of class supplies.
Special Conditions
  • May need to work additional hours or adjust schedule to meet special tasks.
  • May be called back periodically for emergency work.
  • Must successfully pass a pre‑employment background check.
