The Shamblin lab seeks laboratory assistants for wildlife and fisheries sample processing and DNA extractions for population genetic analyses. This position will assist graduate and undergraduate students with sample tracking, processing of blood, eggshell, skin, fin clip, and swab samples, and DNA extractions for genotyping and sequencing of fish and wildlife species of conservation concern.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In PositionCandidates pursuing BS degree in biology, genetics, marine science, or wildlife/fisheries preferred. Previous laboratory experience is a plus, but not necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or CompetenciesIdeal candidates work well independently or in groups. Attention to detail is critical, despite repetitious tasks. Good organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
Physical DemandsThis position is laboratory based. Candidates will sit or stand at the bench for extended periods. This position may occasionally necessitate lifting boxes up to 40 pounds.
Responsibilities- Sample tracking and processing for DNA extractions, labeling microfuge tubes — 60% of time
- DNA extractions and sample archiving — 25% of time
- Dish washing and general lab maintenance — 15% of time
