License and Certification Qualifications
  • Valid Georgia Educator's Certificate in Educational Leadership and/or Support Personnel License issued by the GA Professional Standards Commission
  • Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) certification – required within 1 year; preferred if obtained within 1 year
  • Law Enforcement Chief Executive training certificate – preferred within 1 year
Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field – required
  • Master's Degree in a related field – preferred
Experience Qualifications
  • 10+ years of related experience – required
  • 5 years of command-level experience in modern law enforcement with progressive responsibility in a variety of police functions, including supervisory experience – required
  • Graduate of the FBI National Academy or a related senior police management program – preferred
Skills and Knowledge
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the school system community and the general public
  • Problem‑solving skills and ability to handle a variety of concrete variables
  • Interaction and communication skills with public safety officials and organizations
  • Knowledge of school safety, emergency management, and emergency preparation

Primary Responsibilities
  • Direct the activities and processes of the Department of Safety and Security and develop and enforce safety and security procedures for GCPS
  • Study federal and state security regulations and restrictions relevant to school and district operations
  • Direct the safety and security personnel in developing district security measures that comply with regulations
  • Create emergency crisis plans approved by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency
  • Oversee security checks to ensure schools comply with safety procedures
  • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment for staff, faculty, and students
  • Consult with local, district, and federal representatives regarding regulatory interpretations
  • Coordinate personnel activities when security measures need updating due to regulatory changes
  • Plan and implement emergency and safety procedures for schools and the district
  • Collaborate with County and State Emergency Operations Center agencies to strengthen emergency preparedness and response capabilities
  • Organize and maintain records related to school safety and security
  • Maintain state certification requirements as a Police Agency
  • Communicate effectively with local law enforcement to resolve safety and security issues within the schools and district
  • Establish and maintain relationships with city and county police leaders and other emergency services to support school system goals
  • Provide management direction to staff to increase efficiency and effectiveness in achieving school system objectives
  • Develop and implement goals, work methods, practices, and standard operating procedures
  • Investigate and report on-campus incidents, process incident reports for criminal and accident events, comply with mandated reporting to the District Attorney’s Office and FBI requirements, and ensure school officials are informed of media‑relevant reports
